I know this post is a bit old, but I am having the exact same issue, but with a MammoWorld plugin – Tracker2Mask. My resolution is 3840×2160. There has to be a solution for this, right? High dpi displays are becoming increasingly more useful and common. Thanks!

  • I went with levels then LumaKey, then set the transfer mode to overlay, which worked well with the key. That particular element with those effects looks pretty good as a bullet hit on dirt or sandy ground, and I’m happy with the result. I’ll post a link to the finished product when I finally get it done.

  • Alright, Luma keying worked out beautifully! Thanks for the help!

  • Alright, thanks for the feedback! I’ll give luma keying a go.

  • Thanks for the reply Dave!

I agree with you entirely; unfortunately, squibs (or really any practical effects) weren’t possible when shooting. I used a go pro to film an airsoft game, and am now enhancing it with muzzle flashes, bullet hits, explosions and the like in post. While I’m getting some cool results, I’m having to fudge a lot more than I would normally like.

Thanks everyone! It’ll take me a while, but some preliminary testing suggests that I should be able to get the look I want by playing with the various expressions and settings you’ve discussed.

Thanks! That script made it considerably easier to adjust the focus, but I’m still having some problems. Is there any way to increase the size of the area that is in focus?

I think that looks pretty great. The one main thing that stood out for me is that the frame around the window appears to be very two dimensional, and the room appears to be floating in space. I would recommend you make some part of the building/window frame sticking out outside, to make some sort of a sill. That should help give the shot some nice depth, and sell the effect.

  • I would recommend trying to do some planar tracking in mocha, as mocha is usually considerably more effective than the built in AE tracker. If you can track a spot above the logo that isn’t obscured by the crowd, you should be able to use that data to match an adjustment layer’s movement to that of the logo. I’d recommend looking up some mocha tutorials for how to do this efficiently. Also, you’ll probably have to mask your blur to avoid blurring people in the crowd that walk over the layer (unless you aren’t worried about that), so you’ll have to do quite a bit of masking anyway.
As for how many nulls/mocha tracks you’ll need, it’ll really depend on the amount of camera movement you have in your shot.

  • Wow. I had no idea it was that complicated. As you can probably tell, I’m fairly new to this field. What about is movies like, for instance, District 9 and Transformers 3 (just 2 examples off the top of my head). Those two both involve weapons that disintegrate a character when they are shot. Now that I think of it, the people in Transformers who got shot were probably CGI, while in District 9 they were either using still shots or CGI, right?
