The 60D sends a 480p signal through the HDMI during Live View Mode, and is complimented with a red circle in the corner to indicate that it is recording. It still is recording to the SD card in whatever resolution/fps you have it set to, but the hdmi signal will always be dumbed down.
Anyone who says otherwise is wrong…unless there is a new Magic Lantern firmware hack that I don’t know about, but I’m usually one of the first to know these things.

Get the 60d. I just got one and it phenomenal, and with that swivel screen, it will help shoot odd angles a lot.

Success!
Made strides the other day in this project of mine.
I took a simple $2 LED flashlight and used masking tape to act as diffusion. That was my light source. Since it’s super cool and has no heat to it at all, I was able to stop the film and “focus” the 60D to the film. Then, I was able to purchase a very old/cheapo lens on ebay for $1. Dissembled it and took the rear element out and stuck it in reverse on the projector’s lens. Works very well now! Super 8 has audio as well, so I simply took the external monitor audio and put it in the mic input of the 60D. The audio coming out of the projector is very vert hot, so by turning down the rec lvls of the 60D and turning down the volume on the projector, I was able to get really clean audio as well.
The only issue that I have right now is this. The film’s aspect ratio is squarish (IDK…4×3 maybe?), and the 1080p is 16×9. Right now, because of the smaller sensor of the 60D, the image projected on the sensor is basically cutting off the very tops and bottoms of the image. Sure, it’s okay-ish, but I’m losing the tops and bottoms of the original footage, and that’s not something i want to do with these memories.
My only thought on this is this. Since I cannot move the 60D any closer to the projector (really, it’s right up to it, almost touching it), (and even if I could move it closer, the projector couldn’t focus that near), my next thought would be to move the rear element of my ebay lens closer to the front element of the projector’s lens. This could straighten out the cone shaped projection of the image much sooner, and keep the image smaller as it’s projected on the smaller sensor.
I’m pretty sure this is the solution of my problem. Next is to figure out how to fix this problem, and keep the wife happy…since I’ll be adding more time to this DIY telecine project, lol.
@Dave LaRonde
I was able to minimize the frame rate issue/flickering greatly to where only a very keen eye would pick it up. By setting the 60D to 1080p @ 30fps, then the shutter to 1/50, there isn’t a syncing issue at all to the naked eye. Sure, there’s a bit of a jitter, but that’s from the film @ 18fps. It would look the same as if I was projecting on a screen. To me, it’s aesthetically the same.@Brent Dunn
HA! Now I don’t need any stinking service! Lol. -
I use Class 10 Transcend cards. I know about the bad rap that they are cheap and are unreliable, but they’ve been working for me. The key is to not to simply delete clips, but to format the cards. That’s how you keep things running smoothly.
Also, IMO, it’s best to use smaller sized cards. Say you buy and use a 32g card, and use it on an important shoot. Well, I believe anyone doing this is risking a lot. If that one 32g card goes bad, you have a whole day’s shoot down in the drain. I have four 4g cards that I use. Yes, I have to change them out more often, but if one of those cards dies on me at the end of the day, only part of my days shooting is lost, and not the whole day.
Have fun!

* GASP!!!
I just rewatched the video, and realized that the part of the lens he takes is the FRONT element, not the rear! Although, I believe that would still achieve the enlarging of the image that I noted in my first post…
However, with this new information, does this change anything?

I know this is an old(ish)thread, but I would like to give my 2 cents here.
Where I live, there are several hundreds of religious houses (churches, temples, etc) in a relatively small area, so this may be only be my situation. However, the leaders of these houses of worship do talk, and have formed a very intricate network.
So, Mr. Harry, how long do you think you will be in this wedding videography business? If your area is anything like mine, not only will you be blacklisted from one venue, but most likely all of them. Forever. Yes, you got your bundle of cash for one or two events, but pissing off these leaders along the way…you’ll be done with weddings by force very quickly. When I was presented to the Father of one parish, he asked my name, and quickly had his assistant check that very list. I was shocked and pleased at the same time. They knew who I was, and possibly gave me more leeway on where I could shoot and where I couldn’t. So the comment of, “If, in fact, the priest does have bad memories of me, who cares?” isn’t very thought out…
Also, your comment, “The day is not about them, only the couple, friends, and the family.” likely reveals that you haven’t thought out your client’s life afterward. Especially if they go to that place of worship weekly, you’re nasty and unprofessional work ethic will carry on in that church, and all who attended the ceremony and the congregation will relate your rudeness and brashness onto the newly wed. Continue the story, and now when approached by those members, the newlywed couple will rightly pass on a negative report, possibly giving out your exact name. Kinda screwed, aren’t you?
And to clarify. “It’s not his house, after all.”…in a theology perspective, the roles of ownership, responsibility and protection falls on the Pastor, Father, Rabbi, etc. On that level, yes…it is “his house”. Even if you take out the “religious” parts of this ceremony/event, the priest has every legal right to call the cops and kick you out. So your underestimation of “who the boss” is, and will always be, disastrous in whatever wedding even you may be hired to do.
I would change your attitude very quickly.

A 60D alternative? Well, the only other DSLRs that would be comparable to the 60D would be the Canon T3i, and the Panasonic GH2.
The T3i is relatively the same as the T2i, but it has a swivel screen and a neat “crop mode” where during video mode, it only uses the center of the sensor instead of the whole sensor, effectively doing a digital zoom, but without the nastey scaling.
The Panasonic GH2 is, in my opinion, the supreme camera of the three. It’s nearly the same as the 60D, but the HDMI signal coming out is uncompressed Full HD video with no graphics. This will make external monitoring much better, especially if you are pulling focus with a thin DOF. There may be an option to also connect an external video recorder via the HDMI, and get better recorded video. However, it is so darn hard to find. High Demand, low productivity. If you find one, either you will pay high for it, or you are very lucky to find it.
However, IMO, the 60D is a very lovely camera, and you should feel confident if you get one.
Good Luck~

Now, my question about adapters is this. From what I’ve heard, there are two types of adapters out there. One is just a piece of machined metal that changes mounting types, however it takes away infinite focus due to the extra distance it adds to the sensor. The other type of adapter has an extra piece of glass that lets you retain infinite, but since it’s an extra lens, it adds a stop to your whatever lens you are using.
Does this apply to GH2 adapters as well?
RyanP.s. I want a GH2 so bad…but I might just go with a Canon 60D. Same-ish specs enough for me to just go that route instead of all the hunting I would have to do for the GH2.
-
Well…except that the t3i can do that cool 10x digital zoom…which is awesome when paired to a macro lens for awesome super closeups.
-
I was lead to believe that the GH2 has a clean (no graphics), uncompressed 1080p signal coming out of the HDMI, straight from the sensor. So, if that is true, I’m sure you could hook up an external recorder with an HDMI option to the GH2, and record super high quality video from it.
This has been a plan of mine for sometime now. Buy a GH2, get a FlashNano, and have higher quality video…
