If you knew the tech problems I’ve had in the last few months, you wouldn’t even talk to me on this thread for fear of catching my computer luck. I’ll probably figure something out… doesn’t look like its anything to worrisome.

Yea, I did convert it to ProRes… I’m on a 2.26 eight-core (dual quads) on FCP 7, output via Matrox MXO2 LE. Actually, on the monitor it seems fine… it was on the computer screen where it was funky.
On ProRes… I’ve been doing a lot of tests with it because I’ve read up on everything and know I should use it, but haven’t really used it in the past… However I’m noticing that my compression to distributors (like transport streams and such) are taking longer on the ProRes files. So are all the speed benefits just within the render and export in FCP?

Well I think I might be wearing the dunce cap… it might actually have something to do with my computer. My cards are definitely fast enough. Delkin CompactFlash PRO, 45mb – 63mb/sec. But I was testing some HDV footage and was seeing the same thing. I think my processor’s just not keeping up with the footage or something. If its not one thing its another!

Thank you for the help. I really do appreciate it. I’ll check the cards when I get home in a couple of hours. A Canon rep visiting the store where I bought it picked out the card for me, so I’d like to think he knew what he was doing… but it seems for the sake of my issues I should hope he didn’t. That would be a much easier fix!

Because if you read my post, I didn’t have my card with me at the time. I was at work without my camera… however, I totally forgot to grab the card again! I’ll make sure to reply to this tonight with the card speed… I actually don’t know anything about the requirements of the cards.

I’m using the 30p setting and I would say its not consistent. Its throughout the pan, but I would say its sporadic, not like if I put 24 into a 30 timeline if that’s what you were thinking. To me it definitely looks like a write speed issue, but I was assured my card was fast enough (of course I don’t have it on me at the moment).

With TV all but dead, stations cant afford the photog and reporter any more. The station I worked for already switched to all platform journalists. CNN, MSNBC, they rely heavily on viewers sending in video on these little contraptions. Videographer means nothing now. The iPhone makes complete sense where the content is the focus rather than the professionalism of the video. I’d rather shoot with a Red any day or a DSLR…. but every camera has its purpose or else they wouldn’t be able to sell them. we should be asking what these inventions will do to the makeup of our society rather than the industry.

As I understand it, you convert to ProRes so you can edit because H.264 is horribly taxing on your CPU due to its extensive GOP structure and compression techniques. There will be no actual QUALITY difference between your H.264 and ProRes, or even Uncompressed. You cant increase quality that’s not there. Now, once you do color and other effects, it makes sense to go out to a higher quality codec so you don’t lose any information you just added. ProRes would probably be fine… if your doing extensive color grading it might make sense to use the 4:4:4 flavor. But there’s an argument not to go back to H.264 right there, those original files don’t have the same color space at 4:2:0 with predictive frames to faithfully hold all the information you just added (of course I’m not sure how accurate that part is, but it sounds convincing!)

I worked for 4 years as promotions supervisor at a news station… and I know that a lot of news stations do not broadcast H.264. But it shouldn’t matter because most stations also take whatever they get if its compatible with their software and transcode it to what they use. It should be CBR… but H.264 is generic enough now that most stations should be able to use it. Problem is that, honestly, just because they’re a station, doesn’t mean they know what they’re doing. Our engineers were idiots and rejected a lot of stuff that was perfectly useable, they just didn’t know what to do with it.
For the most part you shouldn’t need to export to something as small as H.264… you should ask what they accept and give them something high quality because they are just going to transcode it anyway… it wont go to air in your codec
