I would contend, though, that even if the ML hack becomes stable enough to run RAW on the 5DIII there are still several great use cases for the Blackmagic series of cameras. Remember the 5DIII is capturing only video, no audio in that RAW mode. If you’re shooting in a studio production or long form interviews the Blackmagic camera may be a better fit. The BM has SDI connections for on set monitoring or DIT setups. Or maybe you just want the RAW image, but compressed to a ProRes (HQ) file live on-set.
I have a 5DIII and if the hack makes it to a reliable state (i.e. rock-solid in production environments), I’ll certainly run it. But I also already have my pre-order in for a 4K Blackmagic camera. I don’t think one camera precludes the other. In fact, I think they are a nice compliment for each other.
But I do agree that the 1DC becomes a much less desirable camera if the 5DIII hack holds up. That camera appears to have a limited shelf life now. And it kinda makes me wonder what Canon is doing….they could literally own the full-frame RAW/indie market if they had done something like this in 2010/2011 as a successor to the 5DII. They could have been selling a Blackmagic like camera a year before BM did. Canon already has the infrastructure and scale to handle the manufacturing side of it. Maybe it’s a market they didn’t want or think they could get? Makes me wonder……

I look forward to seeing what you think. If possible, can you take some pictures and post them? I was at their website (which could use a serious revamp) looking through their lineup but didn’t find a lot of pictures showing where the connections sit, mounting points, etc. It seems to offer several options for input and output (loop-through).
It looks to be a cost efficient monitor. I do wonder if you had a side-by-side of Marshall or SmallHD or Ikan how the Swit would stack up.

I don’t run ML on any of my production gear. I’m of the mindset that my production gear has to be rock solid, day in and day out. It has to run for hours without fail. I’m not suggesting that ML is unstable, but whenever you tweak a piece of hardware (Hackintosh, over-clocking processors, hacking .txt files, etc.) you run the risk of instability. I can’t turn to my boss and say, “Well, it looks like that hack was unstable…..oops!”
So I don’t personally run it. But I’m aware of people that do and haven’t had any problems (well none that they’ve posted about). Any hack you wanna run….do so at your own risk!

The hard drive thing scares me a bit. You should make a backup of your media/project files in case the drive is on its last leg….
As for the project, I’d start a brand new project and import the old one into it. Sometimes that helps. You can also clear out your cache (under preferences) as another step. If you import your project into a new one, save it as a new version and you may spend some time cleaning up your project – toss out unused files, duplicate media, etc. You may also find that splitting up your 1 project into 2 or 3 separate projects may help.

There’s no perceptible difference to your eye from what’s compressed on the card. 4:2:2 may give you a little latitude in post over the standard 4:2:0, but not much. You’re still living in an 8bit world at either 4:2:0 or 4:2:2. If you do green screen work with the 5DIII, then it might be more helpful for pulling keys.

We use either a Sound Devices PIX 240 or a Blackmagic Hyperdeck Shuttle. The Ninja2 by Atomos or anything made by Convergent Design will do the job. It just depends on budget and what you need the recorder to do.

I would highly doubt Canon will ever equip the 5DIII to do this. Magic Lantern may figure it out, but Canon won’t give us the ability to do this. Their Cinema line – C100/C300 can’t even do it and those cameras cost $6500 and $16000 respectively (The C500 at $26K can do this). GIven Canon’s ever protective guard of their camera lineup I don’t see them offering something like that on the 5DIII. Would be nice though!

“going on” – that thread is 2 years old! 😉 You might say a dialogue happened! LOL! But there is some good info in there.
Ryan, we currently run a fibre backed XSAN environment with 6 client stations hooked in. I’ve had no problems working in PPro CS5.5 or CS6 on the XSAN (besides the usual PITAs of permissions and what not that come along with XSAN territory). PPro just seems the volume listed and you can browse and pull in files just like on any other internal or external attached drive. Depending on the speed of your XSAN and the type of footage you intend to playback is really where the hiccups can happen.
We are moving to a DDP storage server ( https://www.dynamicdrivepool.com ) this summer which runs over 10GigE iSCSI ethernet (just a basic Cat5e or Cat6 cable). So we’ll see how that migration goes. We’ll be disassembling and tearing down our XSAN infrastructure this summer after using it in some form for about 7 years!

Resellers seem to be less and less important as the internet continues to grow as the main vehicle for information delivery and purchasing. It seems like it’ll be a struggle for resellers to figure out where they fit in the pipeline now. What do they bring to the table that I, as a purchaser, can’t already get elsewhere on the internet?
Most of my research I can now easily do from my own computer – Apple, Avid, Blackmagic, Adobe, Autodesk, Matrox, SmallTree, Convergent Design, Quantum, Sound Devices, SmallHD, etc. can all be easily accessed from my desk any time day/night. With YouTube, Vimeo, forums like the Cow, websites offering training (Larry Jordan, lynda.com, fxphd, etc.) the information is very easy to get ahold of.
As person who purchases for my department, I enjoy the direct contact to my overlords. If I want to buy FCPX, I sign in and download it. If I want CC I sign in and download it. If I need to get a free copy of Resolve I just download it. Maybe this is a generational thing, but the “hassle” it takes to call a reseller, get a quote, authorize the quote, send it back, have the reseller authorize/ship the product it just too much of a hassle for about 85% of my purchasing.
Because the market is so diverse it’s also hard for a reseller to stay on top of all the equipment – Canon, Sony, Blackmagic, Arri, Nikon, GoPro, and on and on and on. Many times with the resellers I’ve encountered I know as much or more than they do. Now there is something to having a personal relationship with a reseller so they can help you out in a pinch or keep you aware of things you may be interested in….

Have you tried using a different battery? If you’ve been using the same one for years they eventually lose their ability to hold a charge. so they may say full, but will be dead within minutes. Batteries don’t have an infinite shelf life.
You can also check to verify you’re on the latest firmware for your t3i. Look at the Canon website for that information.
