Proper exposure. If you’re running your ISO high then you’ll introduce noise into your footage. Cinestyle doesn’t effect your noise levels, it just applies a LOG-style curve to your footage as you record, requiring you to color correct (or apply a LUT) in post. If your footage has too much noise then you need to introduce more light to your sensor so you can drop your ISO down.
The idea when shooting Cinestyle is to expose your footage somewhere between 30 IRE-70 IRE, where 30 IRE represents your blackest black, and 70 IRE represents your whitest white. Then in post you’ll have enough dynamic range to stretch that down to 7.5 IRE and 95 IRE (or more if you’re not going to broadcast). But as I said, in order to do this you have to light your scene appropriately so that you can achieve that exposure range.

What are you playing the file back from? Internal drive? External drive? How is it connected to your machine? What program are you using to view these encodes? What type of computer are you using?
All the above factors play into how well your computer will or will not play back footage. They are all interconnected so their isn’t a right or wrong answer so much as better and worse options.

Correct. ProRes is not a smooth format for use on PC’s. On a Mac it plays like butter (well…if you could play butter). PC’s are limited to read ProRes; they cannot write ProRes. For the best performance you can transcode your ProRes footage to a more PC friendly format – DNxHD or DNxHR could work. Or…you could buy a Mac! 🙂

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202801It’s important to note: attach displays to different Thunderbolt busses when possible. Do not attach more than two displays to any Bus. This means that if you use the HDMI port, be sure to then only use one of the bottom two Thunderbolt ports (Bus 0).

Your ending file size is entirely dependent on the data rate (both audio and video) that you set when you encode. If you want to lower your overall file size you’ll need to lower your data rate, but that can negatively impact your image quality. As Daniel notes, you may be able to drop it to 6-8Mbps and still get a fine product.

Glad it worked out for you. A word of note to you or anyone who stumbles across this thread in the future…it’s also a really good idea to keep a folder of firmware versions in case you need to roll back to a previous one. Many manufactures (Canon included) will discontinue offering an older firmware as they look to support only the newest technology. So keeping a folder on a thumb drive or a local drive (or Dropbox) can be invaluable should you need to roll back to a version that you can’t find online any longer.

You can just jump to the latest firmware. No need to step up to each one.
Have you verified that ML works with the firmware you’re moving to? ML does not always support the latest Canon firmware and moving to the latest may jeopardize your ability to run the ML hack.

It also depends on what formats you are exporting. Some processes are confined to a 32-bit operation and as such can’t tap into all the available resources of modern computers (like any Quicktime formats). As Jason suggested though, using the Mercury Playback Engine (OpenCL for AMD video cards, CUDA for Nvidia) is the best as Adobe apps make rampant use of the GPU’s on your system.
