Yes! This has been brought up to Adobe! I have specifically asked them to have better support for BWF and iXML. Along those lines, I (and many other people) have asked them to translate the BWF and iXML metadata through to their AAF exports. Post sound folks need this! We rely heavy on it.

  • You can use an Expander, but it’s cleaner to do basic dialogue editing and only keep one mic/track playing at once, which means you’ll need to use roomtone to bridge between channels/tracks.

In regards to carrying 8 audio/iso tracks in your timeline… if you will be working with a post sound crew, they can “expand” to all the other ISO mics/tracks/channels based off one audio that you give us in the AAF/EDL provided that the metadata is maintained throughout the process. I’ve been involved with many workflows where the picture editor just carries the single “mix” channel (which could be channel 1 of 8) from the production mixer. This creates less clutter in the timeline and allows you to get your dialogue tracks under 4 audio tracks, which plays nicely with EDLs for the post sound department.

In Pro Tools, they call this the Field Recorder Workflow where we can take any single channel from an AAF and spill out the other recorded channels on our end.

Does the external audio contain share the same timecode and/or sound roll/tape metadata values as your .mts streams? If so, one can export an EDL or AAF from Premiere and a post sound guy (like myself!) can use Pro Tools to sync up the external audio (assuming the external audio files contain the same timecode and/or sound roll/tape metadata as the clips in your timeline).
