MVC encoding is quite expensive. I would strongly suggest you consider using side-by-side if you can get away with it.

The AJA Kona 3G requires Cineform Neo3D to output frame packing.

But it sounds like what you’re really going for is a 3D Blu-ray. Is that right?
Currently there are only a few programs that can create a file for 3D Blu-ray. The file that you need to create is a MVC file. There could be more options announced at NAB, but for now, yes, you’ll probably end up at a post house.
Have you done any 3D mastering with the files or are you just using the raw 3D right out of the camera?

It’s funny. I have the new Thunderbolt laptop. Thunderbolt is incredibly fast… I’m guessing. I won’t know for months from now how fast it is because you can’t buy anything right now. True adoption of won’t happen for at least another 6 months to a year.

I’d go with the MacBook Pro. Thunderbolt is a really big deal. With both AJA and Blackmagic on board with development, I expect cool announcements at NAB! (though they might not ship for several months) So maybe go with the tower:)

Thunderbolt is also dual channel too! So potentially 4x the throughput of USB 3. So running a display and storage off the same cable is possible.

For Blu-ray the dual streams are encoded to MVC (Multi-view codec or something like that). It compresses one eye as the master, then bases the other eye’s compression off the master eye. Makes it small and able to play back in 2D or 3D from the same file.
For cinema, the streams are encoded into a DCP in 3D.
For delivery, it’s pretty straight forward. It’s the acquisition and mastering that gets tricky.
