Use the old floppy discs instead:) Here is the new FCS2 on 20,833 discs. Give yourself a good two weeks to install it.

Yes, we’ve been doing that for years. I guess some one tattle-telled on our little secret feature that everyone who used an SDI interface has been using for years.
Who spoiled it?

New features in FCP6 might be helpful:
External Video Monitoring
You can now output to external video interfaces whose settings don -
[drazen] “1. 7200 rpm vs. 5400 rpm “
If you are editing media from the internal drive, go with the 7200rpm. If not, 5400 rpm should be fine.
[drazen] “2. 2gb vs. 4gb ram”
What type of preformance is acceptable for you in programs like Motion. A serious graphics creator would take 4GB in a heartbeat. But it wouldn’t be worth it from what I’ve seen for an editor to pay an extra $700 for more RAM. 2GB is good and you can upgrade it as prices come down if you need to.
[drazen] “3. 15” vs. 17””
15″ is much easier to carry around, but the 17″ with a 1920×1080 HD display could be sweet for editing. (You can also just use an external 30″ monitor.)

So the files playback in FCP without rendering? I don’t know what else to suggest other than just keep trying things.

Isn’t it like the H264 version of HDV? (but records to drives/memory/dvd instead of tape)

For some crazy reason, QT doesn’t play back DV files at High Quality. It drives me crazy.
Check to see if High Quality video is selected in QT – Movie Properties – Video Track – Visual Settings window?
DV files normally look like crap in QT unless this is selected.

[Richard] “one to my VHS dub rack,”
Gosh, I haven’t used one of those for like 5 years!
[Richard] “I’ve also been thinking of building this system with the new MacPro 8 Core machine. Have you guys heard any reports on how they are doing out there?”
With FCS2 and the ATI X1900 XT, they rock!!!!
[Richard] “with that I was considering the AJA IO LA box”
SD only. If you need component video and HD video, get the Kona LHe or the upcoming AJA IO HD.

[kevin c.] “(also, curious for my own knowledge what natively means, and why FCE does not do that and the hoops you have to do to get that in FCP)
“When I say natively, FCP makes a copy of the data on the tape onto your system over firewire. HDV requires a lot of processing power to play it back. It can be kind of a pain. In order to make FCE more user friendly, Apple make FCE to convert HDV into a format that is easier to work with. I’m not sure that the majority of the world could tell the difference, but there is one.
As I’ve said before, Apple might have changed this feature in FCE, but I remember at one point this is how it worked. With FCP, you just connect the firewire cable are roll.

[kevin c.] “But you are saying there is something about FCE that is of lower quality than FCP.”
If I remember right, FCE doesn’t edit HDV natively, so it uses a different file format. FCP can edit HDV natively (though it can be a pain).
For the most part, it sounds like you would be okay to just hand a drive over to someone, but you really want to test with a small file before you do.
If in doubt, then find someone who knows what they’re doing to walk you through it when you get a project in.
