    Hi everyone,

I am almost positive that most of you already noticed that apple has launched its new line of Macbook pro laptop (led screen, new graphic card ndivia GeForce 8600M GT, speed bump) So any thoughts…What is the sweet spot, for price performance in terms of editing capabilities…I think when we add tha aja IO/HD to the equastion it should make a very nice mobile editing facilites…I work mostly in hdv, dvcprohd and uncompressed sd 8bit….ocasionally I’ll start editing also in apple pro res…so what would you suggest…

    1. 7200 rpm vs. 5400 rpm – how important is this…how to make sure which one has also a cooling system attached to it?
    2. 2gb vs. 4gb ram – or should I buy 2gb to begin and then install additional ram myself when needed
    3. 15” vs. 17” your experience what’s more handy…I intend to hook it occasionaly to my apple cinema display…

    Best regards

    [drazen] “1. 7200 rpm vs. 5400 rpm “

If you are editing media from the internal drive, go with the 7200rpm. If not, 5400 rpm should be fine.

    [drazen] “2. 2gb vs. 4gb ram”

What type of preformance is acceptable for you in programs like Motion. A serious graphics creator would take 4GB in a heartbeat. But it wouldn’t be worth it from what I’ve seen for an editor to pay an extra $700 for more RAM. 2GB is good and you can upgrade it as prices come down if you need to.

    [drazen] “3. 15” vs. 17””

15″ is much easier to carry around, but the 17″ with a 1920×1080 HD display could be sweet for editing. (You can also just use an external 30″ monitor.)

I’d think 2 GB of RAM is fine for what you’re doing, but just in case you want more, yes, shop elsewhere.

For example, buying 4 GB on crucial.com costs $370. You’d take that and replace the 2 it came with which is a fair bit better than the $750 Apple chargers to add just 2 GB!

    Hi,

Good tips guys…Any suggestions for top-quality RAM? Kingston? Crucial? PNY? OWC?

I’m going to go with the 15″ with 2GB ram

    1) going to buy cheaper RAM later. Apple is really expensive

    2) we have a 17″, and sometimes it’s just a little too big. Plus cramming that many pixels onto that size screen doesn’t really give you much more real estate… because everything will be SO small. Rather plug in my Cinema display

    3) if I were you, I’d never use the internal for media. Unless it’s an emergency. Laptop HD’s are notoriously prone to failure when they get beat on.

Running FCP by itself? 2 gigs is probably enough for short form… 4 gigs much betta for longer form, and if you want to run motion, it’s a must… If you run Photoshop it’s gonna like it too… running more than one RAM hungry app will be better with more RAM too.

17″… don’t settle for smaller, and get the high res for sure.
