CalDigit always provides the best quality product. If you are not limited to 4-drive RAID, take a look at Caldigit VR.

3 drives in RAID 5 will not be able to do do 10-bit HD. Each SATA drive is about 80MB/s, so 3 drives in RAID 5, the best performance you can reach is 160 – 170MB/s.

The 10-bit HD requires at least 165MB/s plus 20% safe margin, so you need to find a raid card that can support at least 220MB/s in RAID 5.

According to Apple, in order to playback 10-bit uncompressed HD, you need 4x SAS drives in RAID 5.

Another alternative, in the lower price region, is CalDigit’s raid card. The performance test page is here

It appears robust and a bit more refined (supports 4x internal & 12x external..RAID6…), not to mention less expensive.

  • For your reference. I saw Cal Digit announced several new products during mac world, one of them is so called “HD One”. It’s a eight drive raid unit holding capacity up to 8TB. the speed test is great, and the size is pretty compact. I might give both caldigit’s raid card and HDOne a 5 stars for the cost and powerful functionality. The HDOne will cost me less than one dollar for each GB.

    [Don Wilson]
    Jeremy,

My 2 cents worth here… Worked with the AJA code writers before the Mac Pro drivers were released and they found that the Kona in slot 3 and configured as 4 lane works best. I use setting #4 in the Expansion Utility as I have a CalDigit SATA card in Slot 4, Kona 3 in 3, Atto UL5D in 2 and all is well. …. I’ve got a Mac Pro 3 gig and a 2.66 and both are solid though I’ve experienced some lock-up issues importing P2 footage with more than 2 gigs of ram. Working with Atto and AJA to try and figure that one out. With the ram on the slides it’s really no big deal to pull out a few gigs and reset. I need to do further testing and narrow down the circumstances but haven’t had the time yet.
    Hope this helps.”

I’ve contacted caldigit before installing their sata card and S2VR SATA RAID, their support people told me their engineers were working with AJA’s engineers. Both AJA and CalDigit suggest putting KONA 3 in slot 3 and CalDigit’s FASTA-4e card in slot 4.

I have 8 gigs of ram , no lock-up issue with both AJA and CalDigit’s drivers. capture, play back, no problem.
