    Hi,

Sorry for this drawn out thread…

But just to be completely clear here is the original footage where the white napkin exists. I want to use my rotobrush results to blend the napkin with a solid color underneath, and then use those results to layer on top of the original footage so the blended color takes the place of the white napkin.

    🙂

The footage in question starts with the wide shot that follows the two-shot.

    Hi Dave,

Re-reading your original post I think I am starting to “get it”.

But I am stumped at where you say “….use the rotobrush video layer as an alpha matte”.

I don’t specifically see a “Video layer” in rotobrush. I see where I can “Toggle Alpha” and then I see the solid white shape that rotobrush created”. But I don’t think that is what you meant.

Here’s a link to what I have so far…. It’s the rotobrush of the napkin…. I want to blend the napkin color with a dark blue solid that I assume I would put under the rotobrush result

    To clarify,

I want to change the “napkin” area to approximately the color of the Jacket.

Currently in the original video the napkin is white and has some folds in it which I want to retain. I want to blend the napkin with a dark blue solid color (blend mode) and then use the results on my video.

I assume I will be able to use the resulting matte of just the new colored napkin on top of the video layer to “cover up” the existing white napkin.

I am only adding this comment to make clear that I am not colorizing the existing blue jacket — just the existing white napkin 🙂

    Hi Dave,

I know you suggested I use a nested comp to “turn” the rotobrush into an alpha matte to then use with blend modes to colorize the shirt….

Not completely familiar 🙂 with nested comps, I exported the rotobrush results as an alpha channel into a quicktime animation millions of colors file.

Can I use the quicktime animated rotobrush as a matte to use with blend modes?

Please take a look at this video link. The napkin area is black and the surrounding area is white. Can I use this to do the blending mode?

    Thanks!

I’ll try it but I’ve been told that Change to and color change don’t work on colors that are mainly white (the color of the napkin).

For example, when I tried to use the Change to / Color Change on the white napkin, using the eyedropper I barely saw any color change at all — because (I was later told) the napkin color was white.

I love the power of after effects And I appreciate the help I’m getting on this forum.

February 6, 2012 at 6:15 pm in reply to: Can Rotobrush be used with blending modes?

    Hi Dave,

I would like the matte created by Rotobursh to “become” a mask so I can combine the current texture of the fabric with the underlying color of the solid using blending mode.

In the video tthe actor is wearing a white napkin under his chin, which for continuity sake needs to be changed to a blue color closely matching the blue jacket he is wearing.

Because the napkin is mainly white I can’t use the replace color effect, and I really don’t want a solid color to take its place — which is what I am currently getting with rotobrush.

I like the perfect shape that Rotobrush created (much more precise than I can do with the pen tool.

Also I see this in the Rotobrush documentation, which could be part of the answer to my question:

“You can copy Roto Brush Path properties, and paste them into masks, shapes, and instances of the Paint effect, just like you can with other kinds of paths. If you copy an individual stroke, the Roto Brush span information is not copied; however, if you copy the entire Roto Brush effect instance, it includes the Roto Brush span (and base frame) information.”

If the answer to my question lies in the above documentation, what precisely to I copy in the rotobrush properties and where exactly do I copy those to in a mask.

I tried coping the entire Rotobrush object and then pasteing them into a mask I created but all it appears to do is copy another instance of the rotobrush.

Thanks for any help — I hope I can use the great shape created by Rotobrush to handle the blending mode that I want to achieve. The sequence is about 5 seconds long and I’m not having great results with just using the pen tool.

    Thanks

  • Ah! And since my source has only one mono channel, I’ll use mono as stereo — which is what I want.

I found this video that further helps explain audio mapping in premiere cs5.

  • Hi Tom,

So if I understand your suggestion — it’s to just use the pen tool to create the necessary mask areas in this short clip.
