You know FCPX works without fixed tracks and with a dynamic timeline, and that’s the way it will stay. If you say from the start that you are absolutely not willing to accept or learn this way of working I don’t think you should waste your time trying to find ways to work around it. Just use a track-based NLE instead.
But when you accept it as it is I think you will find FCPX particularly effective. Even some of our most experienced editors have been cursing like hell when they did their first real project in FCPX. Today I’m sure none of them would like to go back to a track-based NLE. Once you get used to working with it and not against it editing in FCPX is a breeze.

Glad it works for you. Adjustment layers are very useful for applying general filters or transformations to multiple stacked clips because they affect any clip underneath them.
That’s why in the end of the video I put the adjustment layer and the still it affects into a Compound Clip. This prevents the adjustment layer from also cropping any background image you would put under the still animation.

Hi John,
I think I have good news for you.
You are correct: the Crop tool will always fill your Viewer with your image, no matter how wide or high you make it. You could achieve what you want to do with a combination of Cropping or Transform and Trimming, but as Bruce says it will be very hard to make the animation look good because of all the interpolation issues FCPX has right now. I have tried it, it takes a lot of time and it still looks horrible even with the workaround of adding and deleting keyframes.
BUT while testing this out I have found a very quick and easy solution. I have made a little video about this, which you can download here: https://we.tl/yh5VYi98ui
In short it involves adding two Trim keyframes to a Ken Burns effect. Fast and easy and no interpolation issues.
In the video you will see that I use an Adjustment Layer for this. Adjustment Layers are very useful and everyone using FCPX should know how to use these. Just install it with the installer you can download from the link on the web page and when you open FCPX you will find it in your Titles Browser under Custom. Then watch the little video to see how easily this can be done. If you have any further questions feel free to post back.

If you want to modify a CC or a synched clip in the Timeline without affecting every instance of that clip in the same Project or in other Projects: select the CC or synched clip in the TL and choose Clip > Reference New Parent Clip.
This duplicates the original CC or synched clip in the Event Browser. You can now make as many changes as you want without affecting the original clip or any instances of it in the same Project or in other Projects.

No, and for our broadcast work we definitely won’t. I am very happy with the way FCPX has been working for us until now, so I don’t see any reason to change.
However our film dept. is still on FCP7 and they will join us next year under the same roof. By that time we will decide wether we will go all FCPX or add another system specifically for narrative and documentary editing. Both Avid MC7 and Premiere CC are valid candidates and we will be testing both thoroughly by the end of this year.
Anyway this goes it will be FCPX together with either Avid MC7 or Premiere CC for us, or all FCPX. Much will depend on what the next FCPX update will reveal, and also on how any of these systems perform on the new MacPro. We should know this in a few months, so it’s definitely not wise to make any final decisions at this moment.

We run 15 FCPX bays over XSAN (broadcast post for national television). We had very little trouble making the switch from FCP7 and seeing what we have been able to accomplish with FCPX in the past year we are definitely staying with it. Things are evolving quite rapidly in editing land. It might be very wise to hold on to FCP7 for another 5 months and see what’s happening then. Having been around for quite some time now I know loads of people and facilities who are using FCP. Most of them are looking around but they have no intention at all to make any hasty decisions right now. And I think they are being very intelligent.

Good to hear it’s working now. If he’s working with Logic X you will be able to exchange projects and clips more easily in the future, as soon as they get the FCPXML round-tripping sorted out.

If you are running 10.0.8 or 9 you should not have any issues with relinking, even if the file names are different. Do you get an error message when you try to relink? If so, what does the message say?
Just one more thought: what program does your audio guy use?

Synchronizing cannot be done with clips that are on the timeline. Would be nice, though.
If you have sent the original clip that you have imported in your Event to your sound guy and he has sent you back the sweetened file without changing its start and end points you can select the original file in your Event Browser and relink it to the new file. The audio clip on your timeline will also relink to the new file.
If that’s not the case best thing you can do is to put the new clip under the existing one, make your waveforms extra large and synchronize the clips by view watching the waveforms.
