Sorry to disappoint you, but the thumbnail cache does not hold any physical media. Thumbnails are just references to the original media frames. Without the original media you will see no thumbnails.

When you open a thumbnail cache folder you will notice that one thumbnail file contains references to 1023 frames, while it is only 33 KB. So you can imagine these files do not contain any actual media.

    Hey Tom,

We regularly deal with similar projects, and I can say FCP X handles these extremely well. If your video and external audio are both recorded with locked time code you really should have a look at Sync-N-Link. This little app will save you tons (and I mean TONS) of time during the synching process.

If you need specific workflow guidance I absolutely recommend contacting Noah or Sam at FCPWorks to assist you with this project. They’re the best.

If you have general questions you can always e-mail me at ronnycourtens(at)mac(dot)com, I will be happy to help you out. I would also be interested to know more about this project, possibly for a behind-the-scenes article on FCP.co.

I suppose you have already done the most obvious troubleshooting steps?

    1. Close FCP X and launch it again.
    If this does not help:

    2. Close FCP X and launch it again while keeping the ALT+CMD keys pressed down. You will get a message asking you if you want to delete your FCP X preferences. Confirm and let FCP X launch, then open your Library and check if everything is OK.
    If this does not help:

    3. Select the “USA…TRIP” Library and choose File > Open Library > From Backup. Select the most recent backup of your Library and click Open.

This will open the latest backup of your work while keeping your current Library untouched. Check if everything works fine with the backup Library.

If this still does not help: post back.

Absolutely, Mark. And I think a guy like this will be up and running with Motion in no time. Cannot wait to see what he will get out of it.

He works with the early 2007 dual Quad Clovertown, and Lion is as far as you can go on this machine. And you perfectly summarized the intention of this article: in the end it’s the editor who makes the real difference.

Just to make a few things clear:

He absolutely didn’t start using FCP X only because of the price. I know him and he can afford anything a man can dream of. It was just a natural transition from FCP for him. Previously he worked with Lightworks, Avid and FCP. He still has these BTW, as well as ProTools for audio. But he has decided only to use FCP X for the majority of his work, and in the article he clearly explains why.

I had him on the phone for a few hours to talk about the article, and he explained that he has been waiting to upgrade his hardware because everything has been working fine for him until now, so there was no urgent need. The main reason he is buying the newest hardware now is because he wants to update FCP X and purchase some extra plugins that are not supported on his system, such as SliceX and MObject. Also because he would like to learn Resolve for grading, and Motion 5. He also says he finds keyframing in X works very well. But then again he has a lot of experience with keyframing, so he knows how to work around any pitfalls. As said in the article: a talented man like Clayton could use any given software to achieve this. But that’s not the point. He likes FCP X, and he also explains why.

  • Select the Library and in the Inspector click the Modify Settings button.
In the settings window set “Backups” to “Do not Save”.
Does that stop the constant writing to disc?

    If so: update to 10.1.4.

    Don,

I cannot test this as I have no such discs. But use the FCP X feedback page and describe the issue exactly as you did in your post. They are gathering feedback about the MXF implementation for further enhancements, so now is the time.
