Steve, you are absolutely not dense. Some transitions inside FCP X have been created exactly to affect multiple stacked clips at once. The Flip transition is an example of this. The beauty of FCP X/Motion is that you can modify any transition that has been built as a Motion template so it behaves exactly as you wish. This actually takes less than 10 seconds to do. That’s why Motion 5 is an indispensible companion to FCP X if you want to Customize your transitions and effects.

In FCP X you create a Library into which you import your media and create your projects. FCP X automatically saves your work inside the Library so you never lose any work. If you have multiple projects in your Library, they all will be saved inside that Library.

The Library can be stored any place you wish. You never should open a Library in Finder and mess with its contents, that’s a recipe for disaster and that’s exactly why Libraries are closed containers. Everything you ever need to do in FCP X can be done right within the user interface.

Besides automatically saving your work, FCP X also creates regular backups from your Library. These are stored in the Movies folder by default, but you can save them anywhere you wish from within the FCP X interface. Library backups can help you restore your work even when a Library gets corrupted. Again, you can open the Library backups right within the user interface and you never need to go into any FCP X folders in Finder.

Some Motion template transitions indeed affect all underlaying clips. Very useful if you want to apply a same transition to multiple clips or titles at once, but very annoying if you only want to apply the transtion to one single clip without affecting the underlying clips.

If you have Motion 5 you can actually modify the template so it only affects the clip you apply it to. In the case of the Flip transition you just need to R-click the template in the Browser and choose Open a Copy in Motion. In Motion you then disable the Background layer and the Transition A layer, you save the modified template using a new name and your modified templae will instantly appear in the FCP X Transitions browser. A very powerful feature that is unique to FCP X.

If you don’t have Motion and you want a Flip transition that only affects the clip to which is applied and not the underlying ones, I will be glad to make you one and post it here.

If you are dealing with a compound clip there should not be any problems. This works flawlessly.

If you are dealing with a multicam clip and you need to reframe a cut, you can do this straight in the main timeline.
If you are dealing with a multicam clip and you need to reframe an entire angle, you can do this in the Angle Editor.

    Try this:

    – Make sure both Library 01 and Library 02 are open in FCP X.
    – Select the Project 02 in Library 02 and choose File > Copy Project to Library > Library 01

The project should get copied over to Library 01, then you can delete it from Library 02 if you wish. You also could use the Move Project command to move the Project over to Library 02 so you won’t have to delete it from Library 01 anymore, but I prefer to copy first, then delete.

  • I can confirm there is a rather big story coming soon, and actually there will be more than one. I think the first quarter of 2016 will be quite interesting for anyone who uses FCP X in high-end workflows. Now I’m taking a break for the holidays and then I’m off to Spain where I will start writing the articles while we shoot a commercial. A very merry X-mas and a happy New Year to you all!

Mamba is very cheap for what it does. And its power is unrivaled.

BTW: SGO Mistika was used as the finishing tool for the first major movie ever that has been cut in FCP X: https://www.apple.com/final-cut-pro/in-action/detective-dee/

Every 2010 iMac has an ATI Radeon card (4670, 5670 or 5750 depending on the model). Yours has a 5750. So you will have no problems with the GPU.

And regarding nVidia: yesterday, nVidia has posted driver updates for El Capitan, and these seem to solve the issues some people had after updating to EC. So that should be out of the way as well. Just check the nVidia website for the updates.

Except for iZotope and Presones, all popular third-party plugin manufacturers have updated their plugins for El Capitan and are reported working. iZotope has announced updates for next week.

If the little UI glitch is inside the FCP X code, Apple will certainly not release an update to FCP X just for this, Any change to the application, big or small, requires a complete run-through of the core code and a full testing cycle on multiple configurations. Because you never can predict how changing some lines of code will influence other parts of the application. As the problem is purely cosmetic (and even not noticeable on my 5K iMac), I think they will wait until they do a substantial update. I hope they take their time to make it a really good one, no hurry.

Just wondering if anyone has gotten a sense that the FCP team has a minor update coming to make it compatible with El Capitan?

Why would they need to do this? FCP X works perfectly with El Capitan, and it has been like this from the start. Most third-party plugin manufacturers also released updates for EC right away, only 2 audio plugin manufacturers are still working on an update. I am running FCP X 10.2.2 on the newest 5K iMac running the latest version of El Capitan right now, and I have no problems.
