I think you two are in more agreement than it may appear.
Like Terry Curren, I am rarely afraid to jump in and do something new. (Rarely being the operative word.)
Why?
Because like Todd Terry, (and I am sure, Terry Curren), I hold myself to some very demanding standards and Kathlyn would tell you that I will work all night long to get something done if I have promised it to a client.
I only take the things that are within my grasp and while I may never have done that specific function before, I know that I can do the job and will learn it quick — or I wouldn’t take it.
I am honest with myself, and that makes it to where I do not always have to be exactingly honest with a client. (But to be straight up, I wouldn’t answer a direct question with a lie. But on the other hand, I wouldn’t feel obligated to tell every client exactly what I have done or not done in the past.)
If all I took were jobs that I had done before and was comfortable with, then I would have done few things in my career; this, as I have always pushed myself into new ground.
I tend to think that both of you hold VERY high standards and it is your commitment to your customers that has made each of you successful. (I know the work that each does, and I would work with either of you in full confidence if I were a client.)
I guess that the way I tend to see my own moral compass is that (as I have on occasion told clients over the years), “I drive hard for the close because you could do a lot worse than work with me. I place my customers first and therefore I am always driving hard to assure that at the end of the job, they are happy with the result.”
Would I tell a film crew that I could run an ARRI or a Panavision on a film shoot? No. I’ve never done it and would say so. I also laugh thinking that the lack of a union card and no status as an ACE would also give that away. (But I can understand Terry Curren going down to the rental shop and working to learn something he had never done before. I don’t live in an area where I could learn what’s there in a rental shop.) But would I tell someone yes to signing on to do an effect that I have never tried before? In a heartbeat, because I know that I will drive myself to exhaustion to learn it and produce the expected result — or better.
I think you guys are more alike than it may appear at topical glance, especially when seen by those of us who know you both and know what excewllent work you are both capable of.

We all learn most from the things we screw up, Aaron. I can well remember screwing up a job that I had long ago by complaining about the boss. As I look back on it today, while the circumstances were not exactly the best job I ever had, they weren’t as bad as they appeared at the time. One of the things that I remember learning from the whole experience was that as I stared continuously at the things I didn’t like, they became greater and greater; while the things that the guy did for me and brought to the company, I totally let slip from my viewpoint. It’s funny, now Kathlyn and I are the bosses and everybody in our company makes more than we do. Everyone. Especially our lawyers. :o) We get the most weight and bear the greatest risk and yet at the end of the day, we clear the least of anyone in our company. I am NOT saying that is the case with your boss, but just remember that in whatever life brings your way in the days ahead, the appearance of things is not always what we suspect. When it is what it appears, learn from it and/or move on. When it isn’t, then it’s time to really learn from it.

No, Mark, the kewpie dolls are now reading the news on American TV.
Sometimes I chuckle that some of them look as if they are much more concerned as to how their make-up is applied, than they are as to the tragedy of the news they are reading. It’s dissettling when they are smiling at the camera while reading the news about a tragedy somewhere in the world.

Having read this entire thread and considered everyone’s questions and answers, I would have to agree with Ty’s warning. Neither set of monitors that I have, whether they be the Event Opals or the Tannoy Reveal, are intended to create an arcing circuit as Ty warns.
I sure wouldn’t do it and while some have argued that Ty’s response was a tad too direct, I think that he saw that he needed to make it quite clear that this could blow out a system by creating an electrical arcing circuit that the manufacturers never intended.
From many years of supporting users online, I would agree with Ty that there are times when you have to be direct and if people take offense at it, then so be it. The fact is, if you do not put a foot down and say what’s what, people may do something unintentionally stupid and destroy their equipment and void their warranty and be left without recourse.
Once again, I have to say that I agree with Ty, which should come as no surprise — he is the Master.

Yes, Aaron, Jeremy is right: there is no point in you staying with them any longer. Quit already. You are what is known as a “toxic employee” who will always poison the company anyway, so why even bother to stay?
Why?
Because you need them buddy, more than they need you. They could run an ad and have a line a mile long trying to get your job in today’s economy.
Quit.
Then go try to find a job.
