Yes, I cold call. It works far better for me than email.
But do I share my script? Not really.
The overall strategy I use I will share and that is that I try to learn as much as possible about the prospect before I call. I make the call about them and what I see as their need, not about how good at blah blah blah I may be.
Talking about them and what may be their need gets them talking, while trying to tell them I am the greatest thing since sliced bread — which may impress my mom — will likely set their eyes to rolling in their head and elicit a yawn.
That’s what works for me.

Translation? The Orphange is now out of business and was one of the premier studios in San Francisco. Some would argue THE premier studio in San Francisco. (I wouldn’t argue against them.)

[Christopher Wright] “There really is no right or wrong in this equation IMHO.”
There is a way to do it wrong, and I know that you would agree with it, Christopher.
The sure way to do it wrong is to NOT collect all that you can possibly get for the job.
I always have to grin when I see the next round of “What should I be charging and where should I set my rates?” questions.
The only real answer is: Set ’em as high as you can possibly get away with, and then RAISE THEM as quickly as you can get away with.

[Milton Hockman] “What social media outlets do you use for you business? And do they help bring clients? And, are they expected nowadays?”
There is a bigger issue than just social networking, in general, and I see it with many media professionals…
I know businesspeople that ignore the net, and I believe they do so to their own eventual demise. I know that sounds apocalyptic and too doom-and-gloomy for some, but here is why I think that…
We are ultimately in the communication business. And, if as communicators, we do not learn to use the tool that is (beyond even that of the printing press) the most massive and expressive communication explosion in human history, then how will our clients eventually see us? Especially when they look us up and we are not to be found, as we are not in attendence.
Personally, that sends a message to clients that I would not want to be sending. Especially the good-paying clients who want to trust the fat contracts to the people that they trust they can follow, as it’s clear that they know how to lead these clients to success.
That is my opinion. Others may think differently.

And they do help show up information about you in the search description fields, etc., so they are not totally worthless…just mostly useless.

The META tags are legacy items, Mike. They really are a thing of the past, for most part.
We haven’t updated them in forever as the important search engines largely ignore them.
They have a very minor importance but the real importance is in understanding and learning to utilize SEO in a major, ever-changing and updating pertinence relative to what industry you are in.
Don’t worry about META tags in most cases.

[Milton Hockman] “Haven’t heard much about Podcasting in a long time. Is it dying? Are Youtube sites the downfall because they’re more convenient and accessible? Do any of you use Podcasting to help promote your business and its working effectively?”
Personally, I think that podcasting is a useful, if limited, way to market. Done cheaply enough, it is useful and effective — to a point.
The problem is that as Franklin has stated numerous times, podcasting is NOT something that works if you consider it a place where you can use crappy production values. In fact, as Franklin also states, the net is where you actually need to use high production values to rise above the glut of people who are releasing crap.
But a problem comes in because if you are using it to promote your business, the chances are that your views will be in the hundreds or less, not in the tens of thousands or millions. Tracking your production costs against a return like that, it is often an ineffective way to market.
If you are thinking bigger and are trying to compete with a show, then the jury is still out as to whether podcasting will be viable anytime soon — this, as there are few advertisers who wish to sponsor anything other than the huge mass-market shows. Smaller, targeted shows continue to struggle and I think we are at least 18 to 24 months away from seeing advertisers and the tracking systems that will prove that the investment in podcasting is a sound one.
But, as they say, those that get in early reap the rewards when the market rises and they rise with the tide. Those that get in later will find that, while they are entering a “sure thing” — their opportunity to create a large market footprint have decreased at the same ratio as the expanding market and support systems that have given advertisers the security they needed to play in the podcasting market.
For the bigger players, these times are already here. For the small and middle markets, the terrain is a little rougher and the dollars are hard earned.
But to those that want to reach a small market with their podcast, they can create something that will help make their case to the clients that they can get to watch their show. Have I seen that work for many? No. But then leaders, lead, and the rest follow.
I guess the moral of the story is that when there is no gamble in a thing, there is also little chance of any measurable reward.
That’s my take on it…

[Milton Hockman] “is there anyway to get my business name #1 too?”
A good place to start is to use it in your COW sig file as you are doing. The Google search system sees the COW as a trusted and important site and so anytime a search term is used that is pertinent or relevant to the COW, it gets heavy weighting in the search results.

August 27, 2009 at 11:38 pm in reply to: Outside Kathlyn’s office window, yesterday morning…Kathlyn and I were driving into Cambria one evening and a big mountain lion bolted across Highway One right in front of us. The mountain lion had just been over in a housing track and was just returning across the road to get back to its more rural stomping grounds in the coast mountains on the east side of Highway One.
