As an aside on the topic of FTP uploads for clients, we are working on plug-ins for some of the NLE applications to allow for direct “Export File Preview to COW FTP.”
The mechanism will enable users to give the preview recipient’s email address and will send them the link when it is successfully uploaded. It will also send you a “file viewed” receipt when the client previews it.
It’s just one of the many things we’ll be adding to the site this year.

When Cowdog caught wind of this post, he was so ticked to have missed out on free milkbones and beer, that he’s been sitting in the corner of the office, shaking for days — well, when he isn’t chewing on his hind-parts and doing the kinds of socially questionable things that dogs of his ilk, do.
I feel that I must apologize for his rude behavior in failing to add a word of thanks to the board. (Perhaps one of these days he’ll recover and buy you a bowl of beer, and the two of you can share it at NAB 2011 or somewhere else in the future — though be careful if he starts to lap up the beer in your side of the bowl. (He’s, as he says: “Part Pitbull, part Boxer — but ALL beerhound.))

By the way, it’s an honor to have you in the COW interacting with the members. It is great to have you as one of the leaders here.
I can still remember when you first became a part of this long ago and I wrote you and asked if you’d like to join the team. It’s been a long ride and it has grown over the years, hasn’t it?
We are hard at work on many new things that will benefit our members and one of them is going to be of genuine interest to you, Don. Hint, hint. ;o)

Hi Don,
The user was shocked to see that their name was in Google and wanted it removed from the COW. We warn them when they sign-up — and even make them check the box (which is not pre-checked by default) that acknowledges that Google will pick them up quick — but it still shocks some people.
So they asked to have it turned off.
Google loves the COW, and so anything looked up at Google that is in the COW, gets high ranking at Google and therein lies the shock value.

Yes, this is an amazing place and the ideas that are shared by working professionals with others is something that even after 15 years of doing this online, I am still amazed at it all.
Many years ago, I penned an article on this very phenomenon that you are going through. It is called: “Clients or Grinders: The Choice Is Yours.” It is about how there are three dominant psychological “mind-sets” in the marketplace, and the article gives readers a way to quickly spot each one and decide if you really want to do business with them or not.
Since penning the original back in 1998 or so, I have received more mail from it than any other article I’ve ever written over the last 15 years or so. Why? Because thankfully, human nature is pretty consistent and you can learn to read the signs and save yourself a lot of money and aggravation by doing so. (Unfortunately, we didn’t develop the article comments mechanism until the last year or two and so most of them sit in my email in-box.)
It was out of articles like these, that Nick Griffin and I wrote each other and became friends and in doing so, Nick suggested that “You know, Ron, a business forum would be a great addition to the line-up.” So, all these many years later, you see the outcome of an idea. Learn to trust the power of your own ideas, and hone your business instincts.
Clients or Grinders may help you in this regard.

You know, I get slammed all the time by people writing me who go ape**** because we do not let every single post go up. They think that what they have to say is so important that how dare we refuse to allow them to post to our boards!?#@!?
Then I go to sites such as Mark pointed to in his post here, and I am convinced that sites that run on auto-pilot are about 1/10th as useful as they could be. I tried to follow the responses and see what people there thought of this issue, but between all the profanity and idiocy, I found the site far less useful than it could have been.
Just my opinion, and not in any way meant as a put-down on Mark Suszko, a man whom I have the deepest respect for.
