January 10, 2011 at 6:38 pm in reply to: Categorical forum listing seems to be no longer categoricalAs Abraham mentions, we (meaning me) have been at work rebuilding the categorical listings, from an old system to a new one which is better equipped to ready the site for the switchover to the new system.
We apologize for the inconvenience and we (meaning me) will get to it and recategorize things very shortly.
;o)

People complained that we were “crowd-sourcing” and that crowdsourcing is unethical because a whole bunch of people are going to do and submit work and only two are going to win.
Some suggested that we give everyone who entered $100 just to enter, if we did that we’d get to turn off the lights on this site, tomorrow.
Oh well.

The contest has been killed as we got so many complaints from people who thought that entering a contest with two $5000 winners was not ethical. We were only looking at it from the point of view of a community site in which a contest SEEMED like fun and we figured that people who didn’t want to play, wouldn’t. But from all of the flack that we took, we decided to kill the idea of this kind of contest.
We are just going to put it up as an RFP in our job section. People can then point us to examples of their work and we’ll just hire the person we want who has a style we like.
Our apologies, but we do listen and learn from our audience.

[Bob Zelin] ” I haven’t a clue how to answer it, so how do you draw BROADCASTERS that deal with transmitters to Creative Cow ? I bet these guys don’t even know that Creative Cow exists !”
Eu contraire, mon ami.
At some trade shows we have attended, we have had a number of senior engineers, head of engineering — even the vice president of engineering from two major US-based networks — stop by the booth to chat and tell us how much they like the COW.
Unfortunately, they are not big on posting. So we are working on ways to get them to be more active in the COW.
Thank you for your feedback, Bob.

Hello David,
We are going to add a control that will allow users to remove themselves if they are uncomfortable with being featured in a forum. They will be able to choose settings in their profile that will be sitewide universal, or which will work on a forum-by-forum basis, so that members who may in uncomfortable with one forum but not another, can control their visage and interaction with the community.
Thank you for your feedback.

Mark Suszko, et al:
We are changing the way that the Creative COW forums work and are introducing some of the backbone technology we’ve been creating to change the COW from a website-based community into one that is both web-based and able to completely reconstitute itself for people using iPads, iPhones, Android phones, Droid tablets, Blackberries, Palms, Nokias, etc. etc.
We see a COW that rather than being a bunch of fixed links that one must click and use back-and-forth hunting and pecking looking for things — the COW mechanism of the days ahead will logically pull and “aggregate” data based on keywords, search terms, areas of prior interest, etc., so that we can assemble a COW that is 90% fat-free and far more pertinent to the person and the subjects they are interested in.
In order to achieve this goal, the site needs to be fluid, not fixed and static as it has been up to now. Part of this is in featuring the people who are the most helpful based on a subject.
We have been doing a bit of alpha-testing of some of the ideas during the holidays when traffic is light.

For about 15 months now, I have been working closely with Abraham, our CTO, to create what we believe is a site that will be much more fluid and organic than has been up to this point.
We are adding a little bit of functionality here and there but most of the changes will come when we throw the switch on COW 2011, which should be mostly done a bit before or after NAB 2011.
We’ll be taking each area of the COW individually and each will get a unique look and feel. It will all be quite unlike anything that the COW that users have seen up to this point.

This element of The COW’s new mechanism is a small indicator of some of the changes we are coding in as we head to a keyword-driven much more personally interactive and dynamic backbone that will allow the COW to grow onto iPhones, iPads, Android phone, Droid Tablets, Blackberries, etc., in the days ahead.
We are moving to a mechanism that allows portable device users that need something in the field, to quickly type in a keyword and suddenly the people and content relative to that topic magically appear with your answer, or with you you can quickly interact with to get that answer.
You will notice that the display will regularly activate based on involvement, etc., and interaction with the COW forums.
It’s just a small piece of the kinds of things that will make up the site in the year ahead.
Gimme a call when you have a minute, David. I’d like to give you a little behind-the-scenes tour of some of what we’ve been up to.

[Todd Terry] “Point made, Ron… and when I can click on a link and instantly watch full-blown 1080 HD video on an external separate real broadcast or production monitor (not the computer monitor), then I’m sure I’ll be a convert.”
Why did I know you’d say this? ;o)
Your computer monitor must suck. Me, I use a combination of both HP Dreamcolor monitors and Apple Cinema Displays.
But watching DVDs on broadcast monitors seems sorta like going rabbit hunting with an elephant gun, in my humble opinion.
I don’t know about your TV set, but most of the non-production people I know and visit on occasion have set-ups that don’t come anywhere near what my computer set-up is.
