    Hello Martin,

Looking at your video, some of your opening shots move so fast that they lose the drama they might have had. For example, the drone flight through the two spires would be quite dramatic if you could use some slo-mo on it and build the feeling of flying through the spires. As it is, it happens so fast that there’s no expectation nor emotion generated. That is the first thing that came to mind looking at your reel.

You have some nice stuff in there but think of how you can add some drama to your shots and edits. Drama and emotion are good. 😉

We were going to add it to our “legacy” forums list, which will be a list of abandoned, dead or seemingly dead products that people still use but which have either been officially orphaned or have grown so unofficially stagnant that their value is in being a searchable database of past answers and solutions, rather than as an active and vibrant community forum.

You caught us before we could finish the job. Our apologies. It seemed that there was so little activity with the product at this point, that it seemed no one was even paying attention anymore. You were, and we are always responsive to our members, so we are happy to turn it back on if you find value in the forum.

But when companies fail to address direct questions and ignore their users, we think that is not the way to work with your customers and so we tend to turn off those kinds of forums. We spell that policy out in one of the sticky posts at the top of the Letters to the COW forum.

Thank you for the kind words, guys. We appreciate your vote of confidence.

[Brian Fox] “Creative Cow is not really the end all be all for all things post production that it was in the past, so please excuse my not answering your questions promptly.”

Excuse me for answering as bluntly as you, Brian, but if you know of another production community that currently gets well over a million unique visitors on a regular basis in 2016, I sure can’t tell you who they are. Yes, it used to be over two million but hey, with Facebook, Twitter, and a myriad of other social services doing what we’ve been doing since 1995 — along with a proliferation of personal blogs, etc. — well, possessing a million unique people a month in 2016 is a testament to the longevity and standing of Creative COW.

Please don’t hide behind the COW as your reason for not bothering to respond to your own customers and their questions. That seems rather disingenuous to me, Brian. This forum has been for years, the biggest gathering of particleIllusion users in the world, so if you do not want to bother checking in on them from time to time, that one is on you.

Yes, we’re down to just a million people a month – :o) – but hey, that’s still about ten-times the number of people that visit NAB each year, so it’s hardly a no-show, y’know?

    Hello Nick,

I apologize for the delay in responding to you but I missed your post completely when it first came in, due to little things like getting a house ready to sell and helping redesign the COW interface while doing it, so I hope you won’t be offended by my tardy reply.

I have taken the time to check out your company and you are up to some very cool things. The word impressive comes to mind — and that from a guy who uses Android mobile devices but recognizes how innovative your iOS offerings are.

Please write me at ron at creativecow dot net and let’s schedule a time to talk. I would definitely like to learn more about you, your company and your products, and we would definitely be willing to consider adding you to the line-up.

June 22, 2016 at 4:43 pm in reply to: Old forums

    Hello Stewart,

I have been culling the dead forums because here at the COW we hate to have forums that are not active.

Shortly, we will have a “Legacy” forums list but it will not include forums that never played out over time. The list will include forums like Puffin Designs/Pinnacle Commotion, Discreet Combustion and other tools which are now gone but which are still used by people who maintain systems so they can run these old but still powerful tools. We are the only site left where people can search for answers for setting-up, using and debugging these tools and so we want to maintain these legacy forums. But dead forums that never took off will not be included in the list.

Is there a forum in particular that you are asking about? I would be happy to answer your direct question.

Thank you for the feedback, Craig. I guess I got too overzealous in culling some of the dead forums. 😀

My apologies for deleting it too hastily.

We appreciate you taking the time to point out the mistake.

We flag the word c-r-a-c-k because often when it is used in this site, it is pointing to pirating software and we have never supported that here.

    Sorry for the inconvenience, Don.

Yes, Mike, there used to be a Screenwriting forum and it was very active at one time. Unfortunately, the host who headed the forum became so busy that he could no longer participate and it died a slow and agonizing death.

Can it be resurrected? If people wanted it to live, we could breathe life back into it.

One thing that I have “well observed” (to quote you, Andy, is that you NEVER address any of the points that people make. All you want to do is complain.

You have had your say and have had your bitchfest more than a number of times now.

Our policy is one that when arguments just become noise, we warn the people doing it and ask them to stop or we will simply terminate their accounts.

You have had your say and you will not do people here the respect of responding to their advice and well meaning offers of ideas that have worked for them. You just ignore it all and only like to bitch about what you see as the lousy changes in our industry.

As I said somewhere else in this thread: life is always in a state of flux and it is those who can adapt that survive. You wish to stay right in the circumstances as they have been for you in the past and do not wish to explore other options that people have proffered to you. Your only argument is that you are going to low-ball. Good luck.

I know people here who have RAISED their prices to purposely drive off the ones who buy from low-ballers and who have fewer clients than they once had — some even end up with more — but they make more money with the ones they now have. There have always been those who like to buy cheap and there will always be those who know that cheap is usually an invitation to a nightmare. They are willing to pay for great work. AND they work through relationships built on trust.

Cultivating that type of business is what many here have focused on. It works. Not for everyone, as nothing ever does. But it is far better to work with the clients who work through relationships than it is to hang a shingle and wait for “Now serving number 1732” to pop in.

I am in the COMMUNICATIONS business, I do it all: write, shoot, edit, composite and do print as well. And if you want to limit success and arguments to video only, that is a rather self-serving and arbitrary differentiation, because Scott, print is a MUCH HARDER market to succeed in. The challenges are the same but getting through them to success is MUCH trickier.

Part of the reason that you and Andy Jackson agree that the market is collapsing into doom is due to the same lesson you are ignoring here that the railroads didn’t learn in their heyday. The railroads thought they were in the *railroad* business when they were really in the *transportation* business. Because of that, when automobiles came along they lost because whereas the world could have been filled with Santa Fe and Union Pacific automobiles, they watched their market erode as cars and trucks began transporting much of what they had been carrying.

You disregard my lessons because you think my expertise outside your purview. You sir, are locked into the same problem that plagued the railroads. I don’t do video — although I do and have but I survived by never limiting myself. I do *communications* — whatever it takes to keep a client happy. If it’s video, great. Writing, producing and directing your commercials? I got your back. You need print? I do it. You can’t write? I can. Whatever gets me from where I am to the check in the shortest distance and least amount of time, that is where I am. I am mammalian and plan to outlive the dinosaurs who are locked into only one thing.

Only someone wishing to assure all their lessons come from the school of hard knocks ignores good advice and well considered practice that works for others. MOST of the best lessons that have helped me in my life had LITTLE to do with the direct situation at hand.

Truly creative people always look for ways to “connect the dots.” Less creative people need a rote formula laid out of following the dance steps like an old Arthur Murray dance studio routine.

THAT is the point that both you and Andy Jackson are failing to see, Scott: you want to so limit and compartmentalize your considerations that you leave out much of what the rest of us have come to learn, recognize and benefit from. Much of it has been said in this thread by numerous people here but it has been swept away as anything but helpful.
