That’s a reasonably large system you have there but should be manageable. You’re right that loading and processing thumbnails is a key factor affecting CatDV performance so thinking about how many thumbnails (and how big they are) is important when working with large catalogs. The thumbnails are stored in the database so they’re available whether or not you have access to the video files. You have to remember there are lots of different possible ways of using CatDV depending on your specific workflow requirements. Often, the files will have been archived (on tape or removable storage) and if you don’t have proxies the thumbnails may be the only visual record you have of a clip.

I don’t recognise that problem of spurious “stale session” errors when connected normally. If possible, can you quit and restart both the CatDV Server and client (to reset the log file and keep the size of the files down), then reproduce the error and send us the log files to support@squarebox.com that show the problem? We’d want both the client and server logs.

There are a lot of tutorials and other technical resources on our web site.
According to our support records you raised a couple of technical support queries about a month ago, all of which we answered and then heard nothing further from you.
There are no hard and fast limits as to how many files you can import as it all depends on a myriad of factors such as what you’re doing, what sort of files you’re dealing with, what your computer spec is, what else you use the computer for, what other software you have installed, how big the thumbnails you create are, how many log notes you enter for each clip, and so on.
From the snapshot information you sent it doesn’t look as if you are using an excessive amount of memory so there may be something else going on. If you can send a CatDV Error Log (accessible via the Help menu) to support@squarebox.com that might provide some additional clues.

Naively I would assume exiftool -dc:subject=${U9} might do what you want but this is completely untested and I’m not familiar with how reliable exiftool tool is as editing metadata, so you should do extensive testing (and ensure you have backup copies of the original versions of any critical media files) before relying on this in a production workflow!

Please note this applies to Windows only (QuickTime 7.7.5). On the Mac there is no need or opportunity to do manual installs of QuickTime as it’s part of the normal operating system software.

Also, please be aware that there was a problem with worker 5.0.6 that meant that path mappings didn’t work properly but this has been fixed in 5.0.7 at https://www.squarebox.com/download/

October 15, 2013 at 12:03 am in reply to: Proper way to import Data for Multi Grouping Fields // XML Batch Import // CLI // WorkerInternally a “multi” user field stores the values separated by a newline value. It converts the newlines to semicolons for display purposes as that takes up less space. I’m not sure whether reading mutliple values via XML is supported in CatDV 9 but you could try placing a newline entity ( ) in the xml file and see if that works.

Update: It looks like there may be some incompatibility issue between the launcher in CatDV 9 and some other component (most likely a Java update or similar) that we have fixed in CatDV 10. Jeff was able to fix his CatDV 9 installation by copying over the CatDV Pro.exe launcher from v10.

August 14, 2013 at 9:09 pm in reply to: CatDV won’t generate proxy file for ProRes 4444That looks like a bug in the ProRes codec that it won’t export to anything smaller than half its size. I can see the same thing when using QuickTime 7 Player Pro so it looks like it’s not specific to CatDV.
