In addition to what John has said, YouTube won’t allow you to upload a blind music track. There has to be a video track, whether it contains a moving sequence, a still image or just text. It doesn’t matter, as long as there is something there. So you are all set to go with your still image in the video track. However, YouTube may take it down after a couple of days if the music is subject to copyright. Then you’ll be on the naughty step for a while :o)

Oh dear… Can you capture from the mini DV camera? As you have upgraded to a later OS, then downgraded I would imagine your computer firmware is still that which was modified by El Cap. Check your system info – EFI Boot ROM version, make a note of it then look it up to see if it correct for your current OS. Anyway, first the mini DV capture test. :o/

If you are seeing an external hard disk via firewire then it looks like your computer and cable are functioning ok in that respect. Are you sure that you have set video output on the deck to iLink? If so then it sounds like you have a problem with the deck because that port is not active if your Mac doesn’t see it at system level.
It’s very easy to dig yourself into a hole when things like this happen, but I think you need to be looking at the deck rather than the computer. I’ve never had a J series deck connected via firewire and always used a control cable. Have you tried setting your capture settings to “non controllable device” then pressing play on the deck?

FCP grabs the firewire port on the computer as soon as it launches and doesn’t like being disturbed. The computer can be on but FCP not running. Connect the Firewire cable then power the deck. Then launch FCP. In that order. Now FCP will see any device connected by Firewire.

Michael, not that I’m likely to be going through this process anytime soon, but I’m curious about your recommendations. As this process is copying the original, do you think that Log – or HDR will be better? Log is great in a live scene but it seems to me that there will be no detail in the shadows or highlights in the original to bring out. I’m not challenging what you say, just curious.

For archival purposes film is by far the best, good for 100 years plus, digital will be gone in 10. However, if thats what you want to do, then your film processor will advise, they have lot’s of experience. After the edit you could get it printed back to film, but it’s expensive.

YouTube may indeed accept 4k but but they compress the hell out of it. Many consumers have slow or limited bandwidth and due to this being a promotional video which needs to reach the widest audience I suggested 720p, which looks good and plays back without buffering in most situations, for that reason.

Correct for Youtube. You said the edit was complete. What format is it now and how will it come to you. Ideally you would want a Quicktime compatible file, preferably Apple ProRes so that you don’t need to go through any conversion process in order to get it into FCP. Ask if they can give you that.

The “my cloud” is not for editing purposes. It’s just a box that sits somewhere waiting for your files. It’s online all the time just like rented space on somewhere else. The WD “My Cloud” is not expensive and could work out cheaper than rented cloud services. You would transfer your files from the WD box to your edit disks directly via ethernet when you get back. Pretty simple.
