“roger what do mean subclips won’t transfer well between projects? I never had any problem like that …. ”
Open two instances of Vegas. Try dragging a bin of subclips from one project to another (the destination doesn’t matter – a new blank project, a complex one, etc). At least for me, when dragging between projects all of the subclips get renamed to something primitive like ‘tape name – subclip 1’.
I’ve looked online and this seems to be a known issue in Vegas since version 6 or so (whenever subclips were introduced?). I’ve seen scripts that can accomodate other subclip problems (ie batch rendering I think), but nothing for transferring between projects.
Greatly appreciated if anyone has any insight into this. It’s obnoxious enough to make me reconsider Vegas as something that can do what I need (assuming I’m right about all of this).

Good topic – food for thought.
I use subclips extensively, and simply add AT LEAST five seconds at the beginning and end of each clip, so I can avoid the process of opening the parent clip.
However, other methods in this thread do sound interesting, and make me wonder if there are more efficient ways for me to work.
The main appeal of using subclips to me is that I can name them and organize them in my media bins. Is there a way to do this using other methods? (ie I’ve seen people recommend using regions, etc) The “Alternate Take” method with subclips sounds very promising too.
PS – I’m also debating other methods because, as you can see in my topic posted earlier, subclips don’t seem to transfer well between projects? Wondering how seriously they were intended to be used.

I’ve been meaning to ask, actually – Sony CRT monitors seem to be very popular, but I’ve never heard much either way about JVC’s monitors.
This one at B&H seems like a good price, around $480 for a 15″ that does NTSC/PAL, has BNC, etc – ordinary specs. Yet it seems a good amount cheaper than some others with similar specs, so it makes me a bit wary.

I hate to admit this mistake, but, I just checked, and the mistake actually was on my end.
I don’t understand why, but it was because of using the Broadcast Safe plugin in Vegas. I had it enabled and set it to “Lenient”, which removed most of the PLUGE pattern, and caused the mismatching of the color bars.
I disabled the plugin, and the PLUGE pattern returned, and the color bars were fine. Now for some reason, when I used the presets designed for 7.5 setup, nothing happened to the test pattern. I imagine the plugin just is a bit aggressive with IRE data near 0?
Anyway, I’m posting this partially just so people might learn from my mistake!
There might be a separate issue, in that the (blue only) bars look fine no matter what I do, but that’s another story for me to look into.

As always, a short and to the point answer from Mr. Zelin. Many thanks.
Maybe it’s time to invest in a professional CRT monitor (but bad timing, while looking into an HD rig!).

Seems you can’t edit messages after a half hour – forget if that’s new or not.
Anyway, I wanted to add the follow info – I HAVE calibrated before using Vegas SMPTE bars, but only for the brightness and contrast controls.
And I worry about the monitor because the three black bars (the PLUGE pattern) is also giving me some trouble right now, I’m noticing. I know the two leftmost patterns are supposed to be subtle, but I’m just getting pure black right now.
The image on my monitor has seemed to be subtly affected by my nearby Klipsch 5.1 speaker (which I assumed was demagnetized?!). It goes away if I position the speaker correctly.
I’m just including this info in case it gives a clearer picture of my situations. Thanks again.

January 14, 2008 at 11:00 pm in reply to: Squeeze 4.5 Audio Glitches (consistent and annoying!)I know it’s a little late now, but I checked the source AVI and it is indeed 24pa (with 2-3-3-2 pulldown). My only guess is that the ‘interlacing’ came from pulldown conversion?

January 6, 2008 at 11:11 am in reply to: Squeeze 4.5 Audio Glitches (consistent and annoying!)Oh, man. How embarassing.
My friend noticed the fields as well. The video was shot 24p, but I must have foolishly rendered lower field first (I’m using Vegas 6, and the program usually defaults to lower field first when not specified).
I chalked the fields to compression problems, but the interlacing would make a lot of sense. When I have some time I’m going to look into what settings I used for the render.

January 4, 2008 at 7:37 am in reply to: Squeeze 4.5 Audio Glitches (consistent and annoying!)Thanks for the idea about the framerate (I was only using 20 because it was in a doom9 YouTube guide).
However, I tried On2 Flix Pro using the same settings (20fps and all), and it worked fine on the first try! Here are the results – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5VvL91eH7I
I find this strange since my copy of Squeeze uses On2’s VP6 codec. I know I wasn’t using VP6 but regular FLV1, but still.
Squeeze just continued to give me problems – I tried a source of 48khz, 44khz, and even lower resolutions (I believe 32khz). 32khz distorts, just like 44khz. On2 Flix Pro didn’t complain at all, it took my 48khz and gave a clean render on the first try.
Thanks for the recommendation for ProCoder. I thought Squeeze was the only option for PCs, I might check out a trial of that one for my next project.

December 31, 2007 at 2:51 am in reply to: Squeeze 4.5 Audio Glitches (consistent and annoying!)Thanks for the response! I’m planning on getting your DVD on compression once I get some more money :).
I’ve tried creating the original at both 48khz and 44khz – my point was that both rates cause different problems. A 48khz source causes the delay loop effect, and a 44khz source (while fixing the delay effect) makes the audio louder and distorted.
Not a bad idea about reporting it. I’ll do some more testing and see what happens. Their docs say there is a known bug with 48khz source audio, but claim that changing the source to 44khz fixes it (which I would argue is not the case).
