[John Rofrano]Here are your options in order of decendng quality:
    1. The “best” would be uncompressed but that is overkill.
    2. Lagarith is a better “lossless” format because it produces smaller files.

I have been using the Lagarith lossless codec as an intermediate codec, and I like it. Recently, I have been testing the Techsmith Screen Capture Codec (tscc). The codec is free to download and install to let you play video clips encoded with the codec, but you will have to buy the Techsmith Movie Studio to be able to render with the codec in Vegas. As far as I know this codec is lossless, and it produces clips with significantly smaller bitrate and file size than Lagarith. However, it does seem like Vegas produces larger files with this codec than for instance VirtualDub. I do believe the tscc codec is intended for desktop recording, but I have not yet encountered any problems with it. I seems to me like it is using a variable bitrate.
Has anyone here any experience with the Techsmith Screen Capture Codec?
    Is it truly lossless?
Would it be a good intermediate codec?

I have used OBS Studio clips in Vegas, but only with the x264 encoder. When I imported my clips into Vegas, the audio was gone. My solution was to remux the raw clip using the built in OBS Remuxer, found under “File” and then “Remux Recordings”.
You could try doing this with your utvideo clips to see if it solves the problem.

  • After further testing it seems like it still might be a problem with Vegas, after all. When I look up the codec information of my raw clips in VLC, it says the decoded format is 24bit RGB, which it should be since the Lagarith Lossless Codec configuration was set to RGB and not RGBA when I recorded the clip.
Could this be a problem with Vegas and how it treats Lagarith Lossless Codec, as it seems like it displays the wrong colour depth of such clips under properties? Maybe Vegas somehow converted the raw lagarith clip from 24bit to 32bit colour depth when it was added?

  • Interesting. This seems to be a problem with my recording software, DxTory. In DxTory, under the Lagarith Lossless Codec configuration, I have set it to RGB and not RGBA, and still it produces a clip that has 32bit colour depth. I doubt that anyone here are familiar with DxTory, so I guess I have to look somewhere else to solve this problem. Alternativly, I guess I could use RGBA in Vegas.
