  • Thank you Walter. when I paste it, there is a shift on the Y axis.

here’s the project for you to test it:

  • you’re right Gustavo in everything you wrote ;).

I am trying to advocate for this feature and have submitted a feature request. hope this will get through…

I see. this is because the order of vertices is reversed – the way they were created is in the opposite direction. since it’s only 4 vertices, you could just adjust it manually (just shift the vertices of the end shape until the corresponding vertices of the start shape match) . if it were a bit more complicated, you could paste the path in illustrator and use the attribute panel to reverse the direction. unfortunately there is no such feature in Ae.

please show a second capture where you do the same thing but set the first vertext.
    1. convert to bezier
    2. right click on the squared vertex and set it to first vertex
    3. animate and let’s see if it’s still problematic.

Richard is correct. You need to set the first vertex. This is necessary because when converting parametric shape to bezier, there’s a long time bug that’s causing the first vertex to not be registered properly.

for those who are still struggling with this you can either try the expression Kevin suggested, I can offer to add an inPoint variable so that the text will start from the beginning of the layer, not the comp:
    value – [0,2*timeToFrames(time-inPoint)]

or you could use the handy preset Drift Over Time, set the direction to 0 and the speed as an equal multiplier of your frame rate. (for 25fps for example use 50 or 75)

    Try this:
    1. If GPU is selected for effects in the project settings, disable it
    2. Try using refine soft matte effect and instead. I find it to be more suitable for edges refinements in many cases.

Note that any of these automated effects are very sensetive to noise in you footage. If your shot was not done in optimal lighting conditions, you may have to try other approach for your edges.

  • thank you Dan. it works. I can now animate only once, and have the change affect all the layers. exactly like the references.

I found that precomping the animation and using time remapping for the property gives me greater flexibility in recreating the effect. I don’t have to reference different parameters because TR will contain all of them.

  • [Dan Ebberts] “so you’d only have to edit that one to change them all. Layers 2 through n wouldn’t even need their own keyframes.

thanks Dan. I am trying to achieve this but failing. changing just one layer, and have the others trail and hold. I am getting an expression error if I delete the keyframes of other layers.

  • Thank you Dan. the second works perfectly.

I am trying to find a way to change the animation after the fact without deleting all the layers and start over. that’s is apply it to one property and not all the properties separately. I see the second expression works the same as the first when placed in the Time remapping property and does not hold the position when the layer reaches the last keyframe. the reason I tried TR is because I want to place my animation inside the precomp so I could change it once, and for it to affect in the master comp on all it’s duplicates.

    any ideas there?
