August 1, 2009 at 6:44 pm in reply to: Movie Studio: Supports 2 Hour DVDs?

DVDs don’t hold “hours” or “minutes.” They hold “bits” and “bytes.”

A single-layer DVD holds 4.37 gigabytes. The amount of “time” that fits into that space depends entirely on how the video (and audio) in question is encoded. Specifically, what bitrate is used. The bitrate is how many bits the encoder is allowed (by you) to spend on each second. To get more “time” on a DVD, you simply need to use a lower bitrate — fewer bits per second in order to allow more seconds. (Keep in mind, fewer bits per second also means a lower quality encode.)

So, yes, you could make a two-hour DVD. You could probably even make a three or four DVD — you just need to use a lower bitrate. (But don’t expect great quality if you go over two hours.)

The catch is that you need to be able to set your own bitrate. Vegas’s MPEG2 templates meant for DVD have an average bitrate of, I believe, 6MB/sec, which is too high to get two hours on a DVD. And unlike Vegas Pro, Vegas Movie Studio does not give you the option to customize MPEG2 templates (licensing issues, I imagine).

The way around that is to render to AVI instead (use a DV codec — do NOT rendering using something like Divx, Xvid, or MP4) and then give that file to DVD Architect Studio (assuming that’s what you’re using to author the DVD). And then use DVDAS’s Fit to Disc feature. It will figure out the right bitrate and encode to MPEG2.

Add a text block, and use the icons at the top to navigate down to the level you want to animate. For example, to get a word to move from left to right, navigate to the Word level, toggle on automation for the X position, and adjust as needed. Then click the Cascade button (looks kind of like the Track Motion button) next to the timeline for that word. Click the elipse next to it to adjust the timing.

The first step will animate just that word. The second step will cascade the animation on to the rest of the words.

July 31, 2009 at 5:18 pm in reply to: Sound not in stereo (probably easy fix)

First, confirm that the project itself is using stereo. Then it’s just a matter of checking the render template you used. When you render a file, the Render As dialog includes a description below for the currently selected template. All of the default templates say whether it’s stereo or mono. So, if you want stereo, choose a template that says it uses stereo. Or if there’s one using mono but has all the other characteristics you want, choose that, hit the Customize button, and adjust the settings on the Audio tab of the Custom Template dialog.

If neither of those help, then either a) your video already is using stereo or b) it’s getting changed somewhere else (by Youtube, perhaps?)

  • Selecting or highlighting tracks or events has absolutely no effect on the render. If you can see / hear it in the preview window, it’s going to be in the rendered file.

If you want the rendered file to have only one specific track, then hit the Solo button (looks like an exclamation point) for that track and render your WAV or AIF. If you need to have some, but not all, tracks merged into a single file, hit the Mute button (circle with a line through it) for the tracks you want to exclude.

  • Who said I already know? 😉 As a matter of fact, I’ve never rendered HD for Youtube.

Besides which, there is no One True Way. Different methods work better for different material. That’s why I gave a suggestion that will let Courtney (and anyone else) learn what those methods are and decide for herself which are suitable for her project(s).

Can’t think of a reason why you would be getting new results from a previously working template. Where are you seeing the incorrect PAR?

  • For the record, the number of “layers” (in Vegas, they’re called tracks) and effects in the project has absolutely no effect whatsoever on the size of the rendered file. (The number and type of effects, however, will affect how long the project takes to render — the more you ask Vegas to change the video, the long it has to work. And if that video is HD, then you’ll have to expect it to work even longer.)

There are exactly two factors used to determine the size of the rendered file: The bitrate (the number of bits that you allow Vegas to use to encode each second of video) and the length (how many seconds that video is).

Do a search of Youtube for “render hd youtube Vegas” to find some tutorials on, well, rendering HD for Youtube using Vegas. Those should give you an idea of what bitrate and other settings you should be using to get decent quality but small(er) file size.

  • Sounds like your harddrive is formatted as FAT32, which has a file size limit of 4GB. Go to Windows Explorer, right-click the drive in question, and choose Properties. Next to File System, it will say either FAT32 or NTFS. If it says FAT32, you need to either reformat the drive (you will lose everything, so back it up first) as NTFS or convert it to NTFS (which usually goes okay without destroying any of your data, but it’s still a good idea to back things up…which almost defeats the purpose of converting instead of reformatting…oh well).

If the drive is already formatted as NTFS, the plot thickens. At any rate, it’s not a “bug” in Vegas Movie Studio. Normally, it can create files over 4GB just fine.

July 23, 2009 at 4:38 am in reply to: Leave interlaced for DVD?

No need to deinterlace. Use one of the DVD Architect video stream templates for the video and then either AC3 or WAV/PCM for the audio. Give them the same name other than the extension.
