    I had checked out Vimeo for this use, but their terms and conditions specifically prohibit this type of commercial use. I’m sure others use it this way, but we have chosen to look at sites that specifically cater to client proofing uses.

    The other way to do it would be to create a menu page that the player would go to at the end of the chapter. It would happily sit there until you make a menu choice, such as “Replay Chapter”, “Go to Main Menu”, etc.

    Hi Alex,

    You know, I could swear when I was at Sony we authored a project for a Japanese museum where they created 6 discreet channels of full spectrum frequency info and routed them to the appropriate speakers for their listening environment. This was not just a standard “surround” system, but speakers placed in specific places so that the sounds of birds came out of specific speakers, to simulate placement of birds around the room. But I just took a look at dolby’s web site, and they definitely state that the “.1” channel is frequency limited (to below 120Hz). They state, in a paper on production guidelines for mixing for 5.1:

    “5.1-channel audio typically consists of five discrete, full range main channels (Left, Center, Right, Left Surround, and Right Surround) plus an optional band-limited Low Frequency Effects (LFE) channel for added bass (the .1). Dolby Digital bitstreams deliver full frequency bandwidth main channels, from 3 Hz to 20 kHz, and a limited frequency bandwidth LFE channel, from 3 Hz to 120 Hz.”

    and also…

    “In the Dolby Digital encoding process, the encoder will brickwall filter the LFE signal at 120 Hz.”

    So I guess I must have confused myself about full range in the .1 channel. That museum must have had low frequency only info in the LFE channel and kept the birds in the the other 5. What I said about playback systems is true, though. Even if you haven’t created a separate LFE channel, some systems will automatically route everything below a set threshold to the sub. That doesn’t help you here, though.

    So sorry about the misinformation. Keep plugging away and having fun!

    Johan,

    My understanding of what they wrote is that you can deliver EITHER MXF, OR an Embedded AVI, OR an embedded Quicktime, OR MPEG-2 encoded using a constant bit rate of 8 megabits per second. Out of Premiere, your best options would be the AVI or MPEG-2 options (if you have a a good MPEG-2 encoder).

    It doesn’t seem like there should be any problem in creating 6 full frequency tracks. You can put anything you want into the .1 track. The problem will be how your system plays it. If it’s sent to a sub, that speaker will have difficulty playing any higher frequencies. And many systems automatically have a crossover that sends all info below say 125Hz to the sub. So I would says the issue is not in the production, but in the playback.

    It’s not just Encore. The DVD specification does not allow that. If you change menus, the sound must start over.

    And just to help clear up any confusion…

    There are two types of “compression”

    What Jordan and the others are talking about is a long-used term in the audio world and they describe it well.

    The other type of compression is the newer computer-oriented term, meaning to reduce the size of the file. The audio-based compression and the computer-based compression do not necessarily have anything to do with one another. They just use the same term, which can be confusing.

    Zoe,

    Unfortunately the folks that wrote the spec for DVDs in the beginning never imagined how buttons might be used. So they limited the DVD spec itself when it comes to overlays and did not allow them to be anti-aliased. That is the cause of jaggy looking button overlays. There are a couple of ways to help them look better, though.

    One of the best ways to make text look good on a menu is to make the text itself part of the background image. That way you can anti-alias, feather, use gradients, or whatever to your heart’s content and it will look good. Then choose something more simple for your button. Like a simple box that goes around the text, or some shape like an arrow that points to each choice. Keep the buttons simple with straight lines to avoid the jaggies.

    If you absolutely want to have your text be the overlay, then there are a couple of things to do to try to make it better. Put an outline on the text that’s in the background image. That way when you lay the button overlay text over the background text, the outline on the background text helps hide the fact that the overlay text is a little jaggy. Also use an opacity of about 65% or even lower for the overlay. That helps it blend in a little more as well. The other, more difficult, thing is to create your own type of anti-aliasing by using three colors to create your text overlay. I’m sure there are more details on accomplishing that elsewhere, but it basically involves using all three colors allowed in a button overlay (the 4th is always for the transparent background). The first color is the text itself, the second would be just a small outline around the text, and the third an even smaller outline around that. Then map the first color to your intended text color, the second to a slightly lighter version of that same color (and make it a little more transparent), and the third an even lighter version of the color, and even more transparent.

    Joe,

    If you are using Adobe Audition (your post does not say which software you are referencing), then it is at the bottom of the screen, right below the zoom in and out controls. When you highlight a section it will list the IN and OUT point as well as duration. I am not familiar with Soundbooth.
