I agree, rolls are a clammy thing; very tough to pull off well. In general I try to avoid them. In this instance, instead of using a black background, I used a mix of moving backgrounds composited with a variety of footage behind the text, so there was enough going on to kind of hide the limitations of the roll. Still, all in all, it isn’t a pretty sight to the experienced eye.

Many, many thanks. If I can ask one more question, as a FCP newbie, I’ve never used Boris in FCP, always Live Type or just the text tool. Any hints or advise?

Thanks for the response. I actually just tried to load the Free AVID software on my G4 laptop, and got the message “can’t find time code run generator”. I have read that if you have both editing softwares on a computer, you should “dual boot”. I’m not familiar with dual booting. I also don’t get the time code message, unless FCP has monopolized the time code thing. Any ideas on how to get this to work? I’m about to buy AVID DV just to have, but I’d like to see the free version run now, so I know that you can have both edit solutions on one laptop.

Did you have to set up a dual boot? I am getting an “AVID can’t find time code generator” when I try to load the Avid software. An idea?

Hi Chris,
I have a 17″ Powerbook that currently has 1.5G of RAM on it. FCP 4.5 is loaded. I need to test drive the free AVID download on it to prep for working on a client’s AVID. Can you possibly take me through the dual boot process, if that is what you recommend? Or can I just load it and use it as is for my limited purposes?
