I’ve got a Macbook Pro Retina and I’ve had issues on and off with the playback being choppy when working with HDV footage. It’s also pretty heavily compressed like what you mentioned. I’ve found that sometimes I get better results with the highly processed stuff by turning off the mercury playback engine and just using the CPU. This means that it’s not trying to do as much realtime and instead will render things out more. Without doing that, some edits I’ve done have been horrible to work on but switching to the CPU they’ve been nice and smooth.

Will just installing Compressor work? Or do I need to install FCP completely?

All the presets show up correctly. Everything looks normal. Is there any way to test if it’s just the FCP HDV capture that Shane mentioned? I’ll try some XDCam footage tomorrow at work and see if it works ok.
I’m used to seeing the long list of codecs under quicktime exporting and all, is that just because I don’t have any apple pro apps installed? I’m starting to think that just installing compressor or something would be a good idea to get those codecs into my quicktime exporting options and not worry about it.
Is there a way to convert the FCP HDV footage to standard HDV footage? or do I just need to re-capture in Premiere Pro? I have access to PP CS3 on a machine at work. I can’t imagine that the HDV codec would be different between then and now since HDV has been around for a while.

I’ve checked and i have the latest updates. I’m really trying to not install older software (like FCP7 or Compressor) on my new laptop, but it might be coming to that.

I completely understand your problem of trying to fit new gear into old equipment. I’m the staff in charge of our live production at my church and we’re running an old presentation switcher (talk about lag, ugh!!!) that doesn’t even accept analog component HD.
According to the Sony XDCAM-EX brochure, the camera can output a downconverted SDI signal. If you run that through either a Blackmagic or AJA mini converter to convert to analog, that should solve your problem.
We’re running the opposite problem since we’ve just purchased the Panasonic AV-HS400a HD-SDI switcher. We don’t have any SDI sources, so we’re converting most of the sources over. The benefit for us is that we can start wiring for HD and add in components as time goes on. So we’re running our SD camera into a converter that is outputting SDI to go into the switcher.
The Blackmagic converters can do HD or SD and you can set the output to be component, composite or S-Video (over 2 BNC’s) so you should be able to get that into your switcher.
For the gain issue, you might want to run everything on auto except the gain. That might get rid of the exposure problems.

It’s been a while since you posted this, did you make a decision? I’m in the same situation of looking at the gy250u vs the hpx500 for a live production environment. If you have made a move, i’d really be interested in knowing which you chose and why. I was initially sold on the gy250u system until i realized that i could go up to 2/3″ for a pretty comparable price.
