I do believe my system is set up for 16 cores (it has 16 threads in the preferences), and I was able to crossfade two 4k clips at Best/Full, though it dropped frames on the first attempt.

    Hi Roy,

I only discovered this out two days ago and haven’t done a real edit yet (just testing some footage), so I don’t want to give a definitive verdict. Playing with some 4k footage yesterday, I found that in a 4k/30fps timeline, I can play a single clip at Best/Full with no effects. But when I drop two 4k clips into the timeline I get lags and drops until I lower it down to Preview/Full. On my system, the image is still pretty clear, and good enough to work on, even if I had a client looking over my shoulder (which I never do). At Preview/Full, I also added Curves, Color, lens flare, and crossfades to three layers of 4k (100Mbps) clips without problem. What I don’t understand is that I’m not taxing the system at all. My CPU is at 9% and my Memory at 30%. So the issue may have more to do with the file type/compression being difficult to unpack. Overall, I’m a bit disappoint (and confused), and I’m still looking for tweaks.

Ah… the learning never stops. Damnit. Adjust size and quality for optimal playback” doesn’t really work as I want it to, though. When on, the playback jumps back to Preview quality while playing (actually, it jumps around all of the lower quality settings as the clip plays, based on how much it has to process); it doesn’t play the clip in the higher quality settings. Unchecking the Scale Output function allows it to play in the higher preview qualities. I wonder if this has to do with using a 4K monitor? It’s a bit beyond my depth.

    Thanks!

This link was a lifesaver, John. Deep in the discussion, at about the point where I was losing hope of finding anything useful but was too embarrassed to quit reading before getting to the end, I saw a recommendation to uncheck “Adjust size and quality for optimal playback “ in the Preview Preferences. Which I couldn’t find in SVP13. But there was a “Scale Output to Fit Display” box, and when I unchecked that it plays flawlessly at Best-Full setting.

I can’t tell you how painful it was working on my last project when I had to render small bits at a time to evaluate timings and cuts.

    Thanks again–

Many thanks for trying it out on your system. I wasn’t sure if it was a Resolve setting and procedure I was missing. You’re probably right about it being Vegas, though there are a number of videos showing the roundtrip process (without getting my error, and using earlier versions of both programs). I posted to the Vegas forum to see if anyone there was successful at this, but haven’t gotten a response yet.

    Thanks again–

    Hi Glenn,
Thanks for the generous offer to test the file– I’ve attached it. It’s just a three clip test to see if I can get the roundtrip to work. Vegas doesn’t offer any export controls or options; when you click Export to… it just starts (no dialogue box).

This is my first time uploading a file, so hopefully I’ve got this right:
    11827_davinciroundtriptest.aaf.zip

    Thanks again!
    Robin

    Hi Michael,
Thanks for taking me through this process. You’re correct, it is just the log file. My first export attempts only produced log files (no XML or AAF), but I see my later one did produce an AAF file. DaVinci opens it, but I’m still getting a ” “No video timeline detected in timeline Untitled, operation failed,” message when I import it and the same run-around when I try to name the timeline.

Okay, well at least that made me laugh. Somewhere deep in this brain I did know that Pro Tools was audio only (I don’t use the program) but in my frantic effort to get some type of file to show up I was going through all of the export settings. Thanks for your message–

Vegas exports an “Media Composer AAF” file, but it doesn’t appear in the Import window in DaVinci. When I look at the file info, it’s a “.log” not an .aaf. Is this correct? Also the full file name is strange: “Rocket Promo.aaf,28-10-2017,22-56-50.log”. All of my export types produce a date, number sequence,.log after the original file type.

    Thanks–

Oh it’s weird. I make about 10 keyframe mistakes an hour, so I’m used to catching and correcting them. To add to the mystery, while the new render solved the issue with my highlight boxes (which are keyframed) it didn’t with my text (which isn’t). Much less of that (and my text is far less precise in its placement), so I’m just dealing with it. I’m curious to see whether the problem persists when I work on another project or if it’s specific to this one.
