[anita sancha] “Some of the file names/numbers, when I’ve made videos, are identical. So there is a danger of overwriting especially in Finder. I have to take care. “
If you are using FCP to ingest (which obviously you should be) then there is absolutely no danger of that happening.
[anita sancha] “Does anyone know of a quick way to rename files? or how do others solve this issue.”
Once inside FCP you can easily and quickly (batch) rename clips via the Modify menu by means of a very powerful “Token” principle that you can freely define yourself (if needed).
I find this whole renaming thing is rather ironic actually, since FCP only now with version 10.1.2 retains the actual clip names from the camera, as opposed to renaming them with a time and day stamp as it did previously, which – again, ironically – was originally done for this exact reason. But lots were apparently miffed over the whole concept (no idea why), to the point that they now have chosen to take this route.

Ah! Sorry. You’re right. My bad. “Favorites” and “Favorites Menu” are two different folders. Throw it in the latter then it (obviously) shows up, yes.

[Simon Ubsdell] “You could always put it in the Favorites Menu and simply pull it down from there”
By defining it as a favorite it’s already in the menu. 😉 (and that was part of my suggestion, yes)

[Simon Ubsdell] “would be to make the chosen text color/style whatever into a Favorite”
Good tip. Probably your best workaround at this point, even if it means more clicking and not being quite as convenient. Since you’d have to drag the favorite from the library to the canvas (or select it from the Favorites menu) every time first, instead of simply using the text tool. OR you could give it a shortcut, seeing that it resides in the “Favorites” menu after being defined. 🙂

[Simon Ubsdell] “Call up the HUD tool (F7) and set the color there before you create your shape or whatever – that will then stay as the default till you change it.”
Nope, that won’t in fact work with text, only shapes and others. That’s what I was thinking would/should happen, too. But…

How could that be a bigger pain than having to rotoscope her? You’d merely need a small green screen behind her and a clean plate (assuming the camera is locked).

Oh, sorry. You’re already in Motion, huh? 😀 Got confused with which forum I was in.
Interesting question. I just played with it a bit, but it would seem that you can’t edit or replace the “Normal” preset nor redefine the default one, which I would have thought would be the way to go.
I’ll have to play with it a bit and see if I can figure something out, because I can recall having a similar problem, too. Maybe Mark knows something I’m not thinking of in the meantime? 🙂

Simply make your own or edit the one you’re using in Motion. That’s where the default is defined, not in FCP.

July 7, 2014 at 3:08 pm in reply to: How do I cut a chroma key shape and export it with alpha channel in motion? With THAT background? Sorry, but you’d have had to shoot it completely differently to spare yourself a roto. The only thing I can think of that might be of some help is SliceX. But only if the girl is practically motionless.
It helps to figure out what (and how) you want to do something before you start shooting. Otherwise suffer the consequences. 😉

July 7, 2014 at 2:24 pm in reply to: How do I cut a chroma key shape and export it with alpha channel in motion?Erm… yes. If she is on the same layer as the background, how are you going to place something “between” her and it?
