Larry Jordan has also advised keeping “legacy” computers to run software that is perfectly lively but which the publisher has tried to kill. Are there advantages to partitioned hard drives over separate computers? Seven years is an eyeblink in human lives.

I use a Diamond brand USB converter, and SVG(A?) adapter to put the bins and titles on an old computer monitor,
and the minidisplay “Thunderbolt” adapter to send HDMI to a flat-screen TV for the Program.
Adapters from B&H, make sure to get a Mac adapter. Cheap.
Requires a little tinkering in Preferences to get the Program monitor working. Also it is not quite accurate to the full-screen aspect ratio, so when I need that I disable the Preferences selection an drag the Program Window onto the TV.

Hmmn. DVDs are notorious for their fickleness in different players. When you say “play on TV’ do you mean play from a specific DVD player on TV? Mac OS versions are also notorious for their response to different software. The Mac OS DVD software may have “advanced’ beyond your DVD file formats.

  • Try to get an advanced student or intern from a local college. A friend who is a musician connected with an intern who edits all his performances.

  • Thanks Dave. I had heard about the reason for the change to 29.97 so I guess this has filtered down to digital capture in the form of 23.976. And we need to shoot 24 fps for theatrical and 23.976 for broadcast.
A friend shot both film and video and edited in FCP7 which identified the footage as 23.976. Maybe interpreted the scan as 23.976. She had sync issues in doing the mix.
I’m using Premiere which lets you make the choice — now I know which to choose for what.
    Thanks again,
    Robert

July 3, 2017 at 4:57 pm in reply to: 30fps to 24fps very jumpy

Jumping in on this . . . I have a program with three sections . . . two shot at 30 fps, one at 24 pfs. To put them in a single file I guess I would choose 30 fps. Though DCPs seem to want only 24 fps. Live and learn. Guess I’ll switch to 24 fps for everything for best theatrical and archival format.

  • Typo: should be 29.97 fps for broadcast.

  • Thanks for the info, Brent. Do I understand that the 23.976 rate is for broadcast deliverable programs and that’s why it exists? To convert to 27.97 fps for broadcast.
I’ve been wondering why it exists.
It seems DCP conversion studios for theatrical projection mostly require 24 fps.
Thanks for any further light you can shed on this.

    July 3, 2017 at 3:14 pm in reply to: Apple 10.8.5 – iOS 10.2.1 – itunes 12.6.1

Thanks so much John. I’ve been refraining from updating my iphone 5s to 10.2.1 as it keeps prompting me because I know people who at one point in time could no longer backup or synchronize their phones to an itunes version.
I have ignored the prompt to update itunes from 12.3.3 to 12.6.1 for the same reason.
But maybe this was a temporary incompatibility that doesn’t effect the newer versions.

Thanks too for your info about the Apple “cloud” online server. I see this is a possible back up for possible ios/itunes incompatibilities.
I don’t think the IRS has my contact list, but as we now know many servers can be hacked.
Maybe Apple is more fortified than the government — I could believe that.

    All best,
    Robert
