I think I get the basic difference for intended use, but I wanted to use proxies to keep max flexibility in a complicated project while also saving render time. i don;t see why this caused AE to choke so bad. are there limits on proxy size?

to use prerenders in a color managed project i have to adjust color interpretation each time, and also should i have to switch back to the original comps for whatever reason, I have to manually update all instances of the prerender to point to the original comp. that seems counter-intuitive. does anybody reading successfully use full qual HD proxies as a more flexible alternative to prerendering? I am a flexibility hound, I hate the idea of having to have my precomp structures changed to ‘softer’ prerender links, in case there were animation timing issues or something where linked timelines would be handy.

I’m trying to make a proxy of a precomp. Is there some reason this wouldn’t work? Would like to avoid using render and replace to keep it simpler but may have to since that works.

Sorry about my description. I’m always low on sleep!

Worked great! Really makes me want to look into scripting. Thanks for the tips, most appreciated.

Ah this is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you very much. Hopefully it all works out as well as my sleep deprived head thinks it will 😉

In my rush I missed something- being able to see the composition markers of a nested comp does help quite a bit for this sort of problem- funny you have to refresh them manually though. This method still means manually resizing the work area for each section and adding to queue which could introduce user error, but no timecode tracking required- will do this for final 80+ segments if no other solution found by mid Friday.

Only 6 hours of night left!

Thanks for the info! Got me looking into Windows Media Player preferences and I think I found my problem… the hardware overlay checkbox was off. After enabling it the .mwv video plays as I intended it. I still am confused why software rendering would screw up the levels though. To verify I downloaded VLC and had the same levels increase when turning off overlay. Seems like the files I’m exporting are ok afterall, but will test on my home PC tonight. I was so stuck on the idea it was the encoder I didn’t even consider the player hehe.
