Believe me I totally hear you. However, when it comes to the court of law we still have the first amendment. and if we are shooting on public property regardless if we make money or not we have every right to just as news reporters have that right. I will bet my own lively hood on it. Now if I have a 50 million dollar film on the line then sure cover your arse. But that’s where the film commission comes in. Case point Bumb fights. they did every thing legal and as risky as the content was they still won in court. the reality is everyone wants a peace of the pie. If you can get away with it then great. But doing things “the right way” is usually more expensive. My question to you is do you want to make the film or not? and does the risks out way the benefit. at the end of the day you have to go with your gut. But I will say this if your on private property you better have the right paperwork.

IMO I say cut your losses. If you have Corrupt footage then I question your cards integrity. My question is this How important is it for you to get that data. if its on the high priority then send it to a data recovery specialist. Data recovery is complicated and can be expensive and should only be used as a last resort. there are soft where out there but you could be fussing for hours on end. I have a scan disk and I never once had a problem in over a decade with the recording media.

If you read what I stated you will see that I agreed with your statement. My point here is this if your always shooting for one outlet then make sure that outlet meets that requirement. That said if you are going for a particular look then soot for that look. I agree that 24fps looks better but it may not always be the most appropriate frame rate.

I’m aware of the issues, but when your shooting gorrilla style you just have to go with your gut. Unless you have the budget and the time then go get all the permits you want. It really depends on what your shooting. I know what the law states and while the cops love to stop “Filmmakers” on the streets there is nothing they can do about the public taking random photographs. trick is just to blend in if you want that shot. Trust your gut take risks make magic. 🙂

The 105 mm is a bit of a long lens. anytime you shoot a dolly you have to be aware of camera shake and the distance from the camera to the subject with focus. there are many types of dolly shots but it really depends on what your going for. DO you want a fixed focal length then all you need to do is make sure your camera starts at one focus and ends on another. for something simple try shooting on a normal lens first to get the idea then work with different lenses. Just practice. also their are plenty of youtube videos on the subject.

Rule of thumb if you know what your output is then shoot at what ever frame rate you plan to distribute on. But if your shooting for a wide release with mix outlets then go with what ever makes you feel good. if shooting 24fps makes you tingle in side then shoot that way. Most of the time projects need to change frame rates often but you won’t notices it when viewing it on tv. But when shooting you will. another words capture the image the way you intend it to look worry about conversion later. Tapes rolled at 29.97 because of the 60hz frequency that television sets displayed. lot of history their. today it really doesn’t matter except for broadcast standard. which has to be 29.97 or 60 fps unless your in the uk which is 25 and 50 fps. I think the UK and metric system is odd but thats just me.

If your on private property with signed permission and waver then no. If you are on public property like at a park or street not obstructing people or property then no. For example lets say I am doing a news report I can film on a public sidewalk as long as I am not endangering people lives or property.

If you need to close off a street or think you will cause issues if you do then yes. General rule of thumb is if you can shoot with out bothering people odds are you won’t be bothered. This is a gorilla film tactic. In the court of law you have the first amendment right to shoot on public or federal property.

you just have to feel the situation out for your self some times because it can get messy trying to get peoples green light. But as other posters have stated the local film commission is your friend.

Samyang sells cheep primes that rivals most top end lenses. They sell cine lenses as well where you can manually pull the aperture ring smoothly. I have a samyang and took out the mechanism that causes the clicks. Never looked back. 🙂 If their is a will their is a way.

I don’t see anything special about these shots. I did however notice the cinematographer shot with a lot of direct light coming in to the camera which attributes to soft lens flares. The lenses that are being used are high quality so is the image probably 4 or 6 k res. Like the poster above the footage looks clean so it probably is a red or arri alexa. My thinking is they shot normal IE proper exposure then messed with the color in post. For daylight scenes I think they put blue in the blacks. The DP who shot this looks like he has years of experience to get good shots like this. As for lenses you can get cheep samyang lenses starting with the 24mm 35mm 50mm 85mm to get that sharp look with out braking your bank. If you want the clean look go with a canon 5dmk2 or 3 with a ninja atomos. You can shoot raw. make sure your camera is noise reduction is on cause the night shots will kill you.
