I too am interested in this.

Wish someone trustworthy (few are these days) would post a review. One interesting difference besides codecs between the two is the BMD version reportedly has two Thunderbolt 2 ports and the Avid one has only one. Somebody please prove me wrong!

    Y’all take care,

  • [chris king] ” It will be a bit hard when working Sony PXW-FS7 footage with Avid MC. Well, things can be different if you change XAVC to Avid Media Composer more edit-friendly format DNxHD.”

One has to be careful when speaking of codecs and containers. There are several versions of XAVC and subversions if you consider the mbs.

XAVC-S and XAVC-L may be an issue for AVID, I don’t know as I don’t shoot those. I did just AMA’ed to 1080/23.98p XAVC-I from the Sony FS7 and it seems to play fine on my maxxed out late 2013 15″MBP Retina . Usual cavaets apply. Select the correct AMA plugin in the list and if using the Folder version make sure to select the folder above the card structure. And of course you should have copied the card structure to a subfolder (not root) on a drive.

The XAVC-I that the FS7 shoots is the same as F5/55 uses.

On the other hand, I stand by my earlier suggestion for folks to start in Resolve. Folks spend too much time trying to make AMA work.

    Hope y’all have some fun,
    Robert

  • [Michael Phillips] “There is a handful of codecs that are considered “native” to Avid and only require a consolidate. Also, if I am working on a smaller project where I decide to transcode only once to my final quality, I may just do that directly in Media Composer via AMA link/transcode.”

Yep, but I like to use the color controls in Resolve for creating the offline clips even though I have the Symphony option. And AMA is often a pain. You have seen people spend hours and even days complaining about AMA not working when they could have started in Resolve and been editing.

I was taught Consolidate was like Copy. Is there an article on the AMA then consolidate workflow?

I do follow your 35mm film project guide as I often shoot with multiple audio sources. I have been using PluralEyes for years.

I mostly shoot now with my FS7 in Slog3/Slog3.cine and apply Resolve’s LC709A LUT as a starting point. I am hoping BMD does workout handling simple effects like crossdisolves from MC for the trip back to final color. Would like to finish in Resolve.

Other issue is that it looks like they are going to want Yosemite for V12 and that is annoying as Yosemite often does not play well with MC and devices.

    Thanks for helping,
    Robert

  • [Michael Phillips] “I think different workflows don’t necessarily needs to start in Resolve, but when I hear “feature film” then yes, start in a dailies type program.”

Really? Don’t mean to sound snotty, but what would be an example of something that would not want to start in Resolve? Other than ENG of course.

Thanks for the link, I posted that to a thread in the Sony FS7 forum.

  • [Michael Phillips] “With feature films, I would recommend a dailies workflow common with features. If you are familiar with Resolve, then do it there to an MXF/DNxHD 36 offline codec. Make sure to set the REEL in Resolve to ensure smooth conform later in Resolve or any application.”

    Hey Guru Phillips,

Didn’t you have an article or whitepaper on the Resolve to Avid roundtripping workflow? I looked on your site and did not find it. I am trying to find the best one to which to refer people and in my mind yours would likely be the one.

BTW, Robert’s rule number one for editors is “Start in Resolve”. and your tip above helped me.

Hope you are well and good,

[John Michaels] “Note that at this point, you should have already copied the contents of your SD to a hard drive of some sort so that you’re working off a drive. Davinci won’t physically copy any files, and you certainly don’t want to be working off your SD card.”

Actually, starting with Resolve 11 one can use the Clone function to backup the card’s data to multiple drives/locations. Works well.

The Resolve manual is full of info.

April 15, 2015 at 2:56 pm in reply to: Simple playback problem: washed out colors

If you want color accuracy you’ll need an Input/Output device from someone like AJA or Blackmagic design…and an HDTV.

Our buddy Shane must be having a bad day. He did not mean HDTV. He meant a color accurate and calibrated monitor.

Color correction/grading software like Resolve do not use the computer/monitors ICC profile and send an accurate signal through a video output device to a SDI or HDMI monitor. SDI monitors are generally more expensive and more accurate. There are some pretty good HDMI monitors such as my EIZO CX271.

And of course if three things match and one does not, it could mean the three are wrong and the one is right. Maybe or maybe not in this case.

    Happy Editing,
    Robert

[Daniel Schultz] “eesh…so just give up on AVID and go to resolve?
There must be something simple/stupid I’m doing wrong.
Like John said, the P2 and XDCAM workflow with AVID should be like a superhighway!

Nope, start in Resolve, create media and an AAF to load in MC. Then when done with the edit, create an AAF to load in Resolve. This is what many of us do. Search the Internet for Resolve Avid roundtrip or roundtripping.

I constantly see folks have issues with AMA, etc. The roundtripping workflow is pretty reliable. Make sure you check the box in the project settings to use the filename to create a reel name.

    Good Fortune,
    Robert

    Robert’s Stock Answer #1:

    Start in Resolve.

[Marc Wielage] “Yep, same issues here. I would love to see Home and End implemented throughout every mode as “1st frame” and “last frame” of every timeline, duplicating the behavior in the Edit window.

Not sure when the I and O keys started failing for the In and Out points, but I have encountered that in the Delivery page (which I insist on calling “Delivery” instead of Deliver).”

Thanks MW, the issue with the end point not following to the Deliver page is really impacting my workflow. I usually output for review from that page. I suppose I am going to have to send back to MC or Squeeze to do a H.264 for review.

By the way, even the buttons in the viewer do not work correctly.

    VERY ANNOYING.
