Exactly. I still like and use many of their products but with FCPX they really sent a message to many of us who helped them in some small way with their success. I for one was one of, if not the first guy to use FCP at a World Series with my own system and Aja had to loan me a special Kona “1.5” to do it. And by doing that and by bringing my system into the building for another project, I played a big part in bringing FCP into Fox Sports as I introduced it to the producers and other editors there. And now it’s the main system used in my department with about 7 seats.

But now in return Apple has sent a clear message: “we don’t care”. To me that’s just bad karma but I guess I really don’t care either as I’m liking the other products out there. But it’s hard to ignore the “one finger salute” as W used to call it.

I did a semi thorough search recently and decided a Gtx 285 was a good choice. Paid around $380 for a new one on eBay. Had to get that one for mac. I found benchmarks on Barefeats and it beats the quaddros in some tests and loses in others. But extremely competitive and less than half the price. And I have boot camp and it runs great with 3ds Max – better than any card I used before.

As far as ppro layers I think that can be a bit a false standard. It can probably do mire boxes than you raid can supply with frames. But how many 6 or 9 box effects have ever done. In 15 years I could count on one hand.

What is important is real time scaling and color correction and using colorista it all works very well

I think you’ll be more than happy with a Gtx and save a few hundred bux.

  • At this point I doubt any new players will show up or if they do nobody will take them seriously. I say that because Smoke for instance is a 15 or 16 year old product and has major penetration in the high end post world. I don’t know that much about DS but have heard the name for a long time. But you could have an extremely competitive system to Smoke just by getting CS 5.5.

But Smoke for MAC is in a weird place as it doesn’t have all of the features of a full blown Smoke – Batch, 3D preview – but costs more than any other software only product. So to me they either need to make SMAC more similar to full blown Smoke and keep the price high, or keep it as is and lower the price. It seems at some point they’ll have to go one way or the other.

  • The still need to drop the price. That’s just insane. I’m sure they will eventually.

I’m getting pauses and hesitation too. I rendered out a comp with a few layers and then it doesn’t want to play the render first time. Will play it on the second time but sometimes the whole thing kind of hangs and I can hear the audio playing but the picture doesn’t move. It takes a lot of clicking on things to get it going again. I have seen some of this since I have been experimenting with PPro. This is really crucial. It has to play back it’s own render files with 99.9% reliability.

I think FCP X is the best indication of where they are headed due to the inflexible single screen display. It would make a lot of sense that they would be developing a version for iPad and a rigid UI would make sense for using the software on different single screen devices. Apple’s theme these days seems to be having multiple levels of devices that all can work together. Like my iPhone is somewhat in sync with my laptop and macpro.

What that does for them is to potentially make each device that much more powerful in the eyes of consumers/prosumers. Like if you could edit on your iPad it would be a nice selling point but not of much interest to many “pros” here or people who do this for a living.

I could easily see this happening if you look at everything they’ve done over the last few years, but who knows what they will do. It’s a secret.

[Chris Jacek] “But let’s face it, when was the last time Apple released a product truly aimed at the power user? They are no longer making “the fastest computer in the world.” They are making the coolest gadgets in the world. I think that most of us love our gadgets (I know I do), but gadgets will never be the first choice for graphics/video professionals.”

My sentiments exactly. Apple definitley appears to be heading full steam into the gadget market. I’m not exactly sure what you meant when you mentioned Adobe though. Did you see something to suggest they were moving into a different direction?
