Agreed. But the writing is still on the wall for now.

The tape stock shortage probably has more to do with ramifications of Sony’s tape manufacturing plant being wiped out by the tsunami in Japan. Otherwise there would indeed be a surplus of unused instead of the frenzy to find it. ‘Frinstance, LA continues to pester Canadian HDCAM & SR sources such as Western Digital for tape. The Canadian government still specifies tape for possible mastering. Defence requires it.

How about if you have no legacy issues but need print-to-tape or numbered audio tracks for post or a fear of sudden EOL?

The Panasonic GH2 does have clean HDMI out except it is reported to be exactly 1080i 60 f/s.

  • A kid can work damn hard at film school… and then have to pay $10K! Say what? Why is that? Then I wonder what the relationship would have to be and what the “student” might receive in return if tuition was $0. I’d call that relationship an internship.

But then what do I know? I’ve never hired an intern. They are just too much work for me to teach, guide, nurture and keep busy. So I have the greatest respect for those who do take on interns.

I agree that tip retreading is an important service for all the new-comers to the industry. They shouldn’t have to root through old editions, and Dick’s columns don’t exist just to entertain and inform the O.Fs. I also agree that it’s a sad day when our industry becomes just about the technology. How would that work out for this forum? (About the same as it did for the CIA.) But I can see that a message about how not to spend $ for technological solutions would go against the grain at Videography.

I will sign the petition, not to somehow force Videography to make room for Dick, but rather as a solid note of support to embolden him to go elsewhere.

  • Think old-time gospel revival meeting meets Monty Hall’s “Let’s Make A Deal. A lot of goofy fun. Food. Swag. Buy plenty of raffle tickets. Get there early & stake out a seat.

That’s very kind of you to offer. Give me about three days to get the whole thing online again and I’ll post a note here.

I really didn’t think a rollover would not function. Maybe things will be different after I upload. I’ll analyze a little closer to make sure the rollover link hasn’t somehow disappeared. I can tell you that when I do roll over, presently I get the little pointer finger.

But what about active content like activeX applets? What are people doing instead or to compensate for IE requiring prior permissions to view?

April 29, 2005 at 2:52 am in reply to: Homemade P2 card?

At this year’s NAB, I was intrigued enough about this idea to seek out a few “big wigs” at the Panasonic “booth” and ask them directly if a 2.5 or 3.5 inch PCMCIA hard drive could be directly connected to the P2 slot on the camera. The three looked at me and laughed with one “explaining” in some gobbly-gook fashion that the P2 cards were somehow formatted or set up specifically for the camera’s output. When I asked if we could expect a Panasonic 2.5 inch or 3.5 inch hard drive for the camera, he gave me a “you think we are stupid?” kind of comment and shrug.

I swear I’m going to confuse that little gem forever. You’re absolutely right.
