Bang for the buck the T1i is a great camera. The only bummer about it that may effect you if you require it is that when the camera shoots full HD (1920 x 1080) it shoots at only 20fps. While this might not be a big deal if your footage is intended for the web it makes it hard to integrate with other projects that are using standard frame rates.

The Nikon D5000 is probably the camera thats most similar in terms of features and cost although it only does 720p

    Nels.

Camera support and rigs are having a huge boon right now do to DSLRs.

As you point out the Zacuto products are amazing but they do come with a hefty price. I have a couple of their rigs and belive me they’re worth every penny. The Zacuto Z-Finder is THE best viewfinder/loupe product on the market its a must have.

As far as other support goes check out:

    Red Rock Micro (https://www.redreockmicro.com)
    Camotion (https://www.camotionllc.com)
    IndiSystem (https://www.indifocus.com/

There are more but I’m not infront of my book marks at the moment. Tons of choices though

November 29, 2009 at 7:06 pm in reply to: error consistent across all 5D MKII?

[araw deleon] “Has anyone used a 5D MkII or 7D that does NOT drop frames when shooting video??? “

I would say that no this is not a consistent thing. Does it happen sometimes? Yes, mainly due to slow cards or in some rare cases camera overheating.

I’m willing to bet if you’re getting dropped frames consistently and/or you get the buffer indicator consistently, your card is too slow. For VDSLRs a UDMA card is a must when shooting video. I’ve found that a the bottom of the heap you should use 133x (20MB/s) cards but you’ll get better results with faster cards my personal feeling is that the best bang for the buck when it comes to storage size and speed for VDSLRs are either the 266x (40MB/s) or 300x (45MB/s) cards. 400x and 600x cards are a little overkill for the data rate of VDSLRs when shooting video but if you do a lot of burst still shooting there can be big benefits. Also remember the fast the card the fast the potential transfer to your machine.

Also just a personal feeling I’d stick to the brand name cards like San Disk, Kingston, Trancend etc

[steve martin] “as some other sources tell me the camera actually shoots 29.97. “

5DMK II is shooting true 30fps not fractional frame rate of 29.97

November 28, 2009 at 1:50 am in reply to: 5D mkII framerate

Canon has announced that “sometime” in the new year they’ll release a firmware update to let the camera do 24p. With the 7D and now the 1D Mark IV doing 24 (23.98), 25, 30 (29.97), 50 and 60 (59.94) I can’t imagine that the firmware update will only allow for 24 and keep 30 as the only other frame rate. It would seem logical to me that the update would give 5D MKII users the ability to leverage all the frame rates including the fractional frame rates.
