  • without getting into the closed captioning or subtitle formats, I put documents of all kinds in CatDV directories all the time. All I’m caring about is finding them though. But when I’m looking for the .SRT file for a show it’s in the catalog of elements pertaining to that show.
I use all sorts of formats, .RTF and .TXT and nowadays some .pages but rarely .doc. Just not a fan.

I’ve been experimenting with Transporter from Connected Data. It’s not bad when connected locally. It was extremely easy to setup in my own environment. At the studio where it’s controlled by the evil “IT department,” (no, non, nein) it has to be setup through the firewall which really slowed it down. I have two 2T units and it lets me automatically keep offsite copies of large files. It works fine for some things, but for other’s it’s just too slow.

I’m using Dropbox itself. Been doing it for years with shared Dropbox folders. It’s worked better than anything else and because it uses file “slices” it’s much faster than just about anything else. I’m even using it to sync editing files among users on the LAN as well as remotely. Stuff that’s normally not possible except with very expensive solutions. You can ping me offline if you want more details.

    Thanks,
I’m going to try it on my Mac Pro 2,1. I can’t get 9 or 10 to run on it since it won’t do 64 but. I run 11 on my other machines and I need to do a little work on this one.

I’m not following you exactly. But I’m talking about rendering out a sequence and saving it just as an MP4, or MOV or what have you. It’s sits in CatDV just any other video, but it’s referring to the motion graphic or any other kind of sequence. But it’s a video rather than a thumbnail representing the “finished” result of the animation/graphics file. It’s just for reference.

You couldn’t do that in any way that I can think of. You have to be in AE or in an editing app to see what you’re doing, unless you render out your work. And in the case of a piece with lots of layers in any app you can’t even see it playing realtime in the native app without some sort of rendering.

I keep a directory with all my renders. That’s cataloged in CatDV so I can search/review/and show them to other people.

    try under:
    Media/Build Thumbnails
There’s a series of checkboxes. One of them is delete existing thumbnails. Make sure it’s checked. Usually works for me.

    Rough cuts?
I import such things as motion effects into CatDV as a way of recording their location, and that of their component parts so I can locate them later. That’s extremely useful in itself.

I’ll try that, too. I’m running Lion (latest my older Mac Pros will handle). But like I’ve said I’ve the problem for years.
