Dedicated sales person that gets tired real quick. Unless you’re offering something everyone will want to buy if they know it’s available, you’re going to have to concentrate on being available to take in what comes in the door. You don’t sell widgets, you bring peoples visions to life. Sales guys can’t help you with that, but if you’re stuck in a room reconciling your bank account instead of doing market research, that’s not the best use of your time as a creative pro.
Here is what I think of when I think of creative inspiration. 🙂

You got all up at arms maybe a year ago with some post that got a lot of people actually angry at your web site. Your WMV still doesn’t work on any of my browsers.
I’m surprised you’re still working there. You have a huge chip on your shoulder, and despite being all polite on this thread you don’t take criticism very well.
Quit and get a new job and write your own ticket. You’ll be happier for it.
I am curious though, what on earth could anyone find wrong with wind turbines? I’m serious, I think they are so modern and progressive and signal a community that’s taking control of their energy process. I was just in upstate NY and drove past a wind farm of well over 30 units. It was very impressive to see.

There was an interesting thread on this in the Business & Marketing forum.
Basically, with some exceptions, it’s best to drive up without gear and rent while there. Then you can just say you’ve been hired by a local Canadian company to shoot and that seemed easier.
Definitely do NOT FedEx your gear across the border. That seemed to make sense if you’re flying in, but it’s a real nightmare getting that out of hock and back into the US without paying some sort of duty.

One thing Im surprised no one has suggested is because you are new to the market you can go in and write your own ticket. Then, add 10%. You might be impressed what a cool accent and positive attitude might command.

The only thing I would say is to watch out if you don’t have physical possession of the releases for talent. It could be argued you should have location releases as well, so it’s kinda tough.
As an event videographer I have been stiffed once, and have some awesome party footage to show for it, but without a release I’m not going to use the footage … just yet anyway.

September 21, 2008 at 2:12 pm in reply to: Using batch lists from Client edit logs – in tapelessThat works for a couple of reasons. You get a backup (tape) and don’t have to deal with floating an entire shoot on YOUR drives.
I hate shooting on miniDV tapes so ditching them for anything (SXS, P2, etc) is a step up. Even if it introduces other issues down the road. At least you’re going forward knowing this workflow so you can prepare (bill the client) without surprises.

You have to shoot XDCAM to get the benefits of XDCAM workflow. Thanks, Sony!
It’s really misleading what Sony has done calling the media the EX1 records a badge under XDCAM. They are really different formats.

Should they – yes.
Do they – sadly, no.Sony kinda mislead a lot of people tagging EX under the XDCAM badge.
