October 18, 2009 at 7:23 am in reply to: Rendering out a composition with layers hidden still seems to include them?I could have sworn that when I had layers hidden it was making the render time longer then when I took the same composition and deleted those layers that were hidden and rendered it out… I’ve been on the computer way too much the last few days working out some encoding issues to things are a bit blurry and I will double check but I noticed this on more than one occassion

I’m having a bit of trouble envisioning what you are describing but it sounds like this is something that would be suited for particles in a 3D program… for example, you can take text in the software and easily convert it to particles (which can be made to look like each letter is a droplet of water)… actually you could possibly do this without even using particles and just using displacement which I believe after effects has support for (not sure if you can import your own custom displacement maps) but you can use a displacement map to make a solid object look like water although it’d probably be hard to do for a droplet as its more suited for something like a pond, river or ocean (with the ripple / wave displacement)

October 17, 2009 at 7:19 pm in reply to: Rendering to FLV, huge file sizes, any tips on this?Jamie, I’ve done some things with using the preloading code for javascript projects, for now these are just sort of video demos but I want them to play within the web browser so it looks like the web page and not a video window, anyways, thanks for your input I will try that with the mov format too although for some reason I’m not seeing that as an encoding option in after effects.

I think this would need to be done in 3D, I’ve tried some similar things, like I did a letter text exploding into tiny balls, doing wataer drops is a bit more involved but can be done in an app like 3ds max (or other comparable 3d app) as far as doing it in after effects, I think it may be possible but I’m not sure how much control you would have over the look of it also considering that with water it can be hard to get it to look right without using an environment map on it (in the 3d application) for the reflections since without proper reflections and lighting water is just clear and usually keeping it just one color doesn’t look realistic

October 17, 2009 at 7:04 pm in reply to: Rendering to FLV, huge file sizes, any tips on this?Just figured I’d post this in case someone comes across this later… it seems that the ideal application for converting to the flv format (or even swf directly as it supports that too) is the https://www.on2.com/index.php?312 on2 encoder… I’m getting some amazingly small files from an original avi rendering so I think this is the way to go instead of going directly to FLV in after effects.

Yeah that logo stood out to me, pretty cool, the whole animated logo clip in the commercial… but yeah thats definitely done in 3D, I’m sure with post done in after effects or another compositor, if I remember right it looked like it had some particle effects and the sphere was rotating

Yeah the trial is great since its the full version with no limitations but does expire after 30 days, as far as getting started, well the help files in the document are pretty good as they sort of explain things in a way that makes sense to people who are new to 3D or particular concepts… once you get comfortable with some of the terminology for things you are trying to do its best to search google for specific tutorials on that topics, the good thing about 3ds max is its very widely used so there are probably more tutorials for it than any other 3d application
Also, check out moi: https://moi3d.com/ I recommend starting out modeling in this right away as 3ds max is more for polygonal modeling and moi is optimized for NURBS which are usually more efficient for most things at least to start the model out with, you can then export to 3ds max by saving it as an .obj or .iges (you can probably find plenty of tutorials on exporting / importing to 3ds max), I think you may find moi to be more fun to model with (check out their help file to learn the basics)

As far as shorter learning curve, I don’t know that one program is better than the other since with 3D its about learning the concepts and then you can usually use any of the programs, I have heard that cinema 4D may be easier to learn than the others but I don’t know as I use 3ds max myself..
Something you may be interested in is this plugin: https://maltaannon.com/articles/after-effects/youveelizer/ What this allows you to do is to not have to worry as much about texturing and rendering in 3D and instead apply a texture that you made in a 2d app (like photoshop) directly onto the 3D model within after effects…. look here for info about how to render out the 3D models this way: https://www.adobe.com/devnet/aftereffects/articles/3d_integration_pt1.html
Just something that may get you started faster since there’s a lot that goes into making 3D renders look good and actually I have noticed a lot of TV logos (like just now for the baseball game I am watching) use 3D models that I think use this method since the textures on them look like they were made in 2D (photoshop)

I’m working on doing some of these types of logos… to do this you have to use a 3D software, 3ds max, maya, cinema 4d, etc, etc… these are done in 3D and can only be faked in other applications like photoshop and after effects if you aren’t starting with renders from a 3D app… of course photoshop and after effects often play into the post production of these but to start it off you need to do it in 3D
For modeling of 3D shapes, NURBS is the way to go… look into Rhino or Moi for this, then you need to export to a 3D rendering app and animate it, texture it, etc… if you haven’t used 3D before you will be in for some time learning how to use these applications but it could pay off in the end, https://forums.cgsociety.org/ is a good general forum for computer graphics with a lot of people focusing on 3D there.
