Hi. I think you should start with, what size do you want your end product to be? (ie: Where will your edited product be used.) Youtube? Vimeo? On a website? for Television? For theatrical viewing? For Cell Phones? For Projections? And what is the material? Talking head speaker for 3 hours? 30 second TV Commercial? 5 Minute artistic Drama Short Film? 1/2 hour showcase of the Big Pines at Redwood National State Park… You get the Idea?
Once you have that answer, you can safely decide what your final resolution should be based on what size of the average viewing monitor will be for any particular project.
Then open up a new blank timeline with those attributes. ie: HD @ 1080×1920.
When you drop your different footage, it may play at different sizes, so you’ll have to re-size it to fit your new chosen screen. You may even have to play a little bit manually with vertical & horizontal sizes independently and shift certain scenes up or down to fit your needs.
We do this all the time when mixing different sources and is something that you’ll have to get used to doing.
