I purchased and installed a used AMD Radeon HD 5870 (although Catalyst and Device Manager just call it AMD Radeon HD 5800 Series–don’t know how to confirm exactly which card it is, but the seller assured me it was a 5870–does anyone know how to do this?). Installed the latest drivers, too! It freezes SVP 12 when playing back an intro with lots of dissolves and also freezes when rendering this 1.5 minute intro. Shutting it off in SVP 12 and using solely my CPU to run graphics in SVP 12 works fine, but I have to use Preview Auto and it still is jerky during unrendered FX. What is everyone who successfully is using a 5870 doing that I am not? Am I now just SOL until I replace my computer in a few years, or…? Any ideas? I do not have my CPU or the 5870 overclocked, either–do any of you?

Three ATI Radeon HD 5870 PCI-E 1GB GDDR5 Dual DVI, HDMI, Display Port boards are available for $149 out the door–no returns–factory refurbs. Looks like the best deal going–should I spring for one??!! I need to know ASAP, so I’m depending upon Dave and the rest of you AMD/ATI gurus for advice. Thanks, everyone!!

Ahhh, the frustration factor increases, Dave! By the time you got back to me these boards had been snatched up, one individual alone purchasing five of them!! So now all that I can find are used or factory refurbs for the same price, but no return privileges. I can buy a used Sapphire Radeon HD 5870 1 GB DDR5 Dual DVI-I/HDMI/DP PCI-Express Graphics Card on Amazon for $150 plus $6.99 S&H. So is it worth a crap shoot for 150 bucks that if it does not improve SPV 12 performance to at the least have a spare graphics board in case mine fails?

Wow, this post has really taken off!! So Dave, John referred me to you as the ATI/AMD expert. If you follow today’s thread I am at an impass. I can’t find a 6970 in stock for a decent price, but I can get a NEW ATI Radeon HD 5870 (per the thread). John is not sure if that will do me any more justice than my current GTX 560…so what do YOU think? Should I just hold tight for a few years when I upgrade my PC, or go for the 5870…or is this just another GTX 560 equivalent? Is there perhaps another card in mind if this one is not for me? Your input will be most valuable, Dave–thanks in advance.

Graham (Grazie), you are a (expletive deleted) GENIUS!! I really have never paid much attention to the split-screen/FX bypass modes for the preview window!! Despite my detailed explanations to ProDad over the past months, they NEVER ONCE asked about this!! No wonder they were scratching their heads!! Upon disengaging the split screen and ticking clipboard instead of FX bypass, I stabilized an event. I then played it back, both engaging/disengaging the efefct, and voila it looked like the event DID stabilize after all!! I cannot thank you enough for your insight! That’s one reason I keep coming back here for advice so much!!

You have me a bit confused on this one, or is it I that have you confused? Again, Mercalli SAL 3 works as advertised–it’s V2 inside of SVP12 that does not work–it analyzes the clip, but that’s about all. When done analyzing, the screen looks exactly like it did BEFORE the analysis–there is no sign whatsoever that the plug-in did anything at all!! Am I now clear on this explanation?

Excellent observation and question, Graham–yes, and I have tried reinstalling the latest plug-in a number of times with no changes in operation or results.

Thanks. I will check in to purchasing a GTX 590. I am curious, though, John, why you suggest going the Nvidia route as opposed to the ATI HD6970? Is this just a six of one, half dozen of the other, or are you more confident of the Nvidia GTX series?
