I dont know if you have found a solution yet but here is an issue that I ran into that is similar.
I have an 8 core Mac Pro and FCP6. I have a Sony HVR Z7U with the HVR-MRC1 recording unit. It creates .M2T files for HDV on compact flash. First I had to install the plugin from Sony in order for the system to see the unit. Then I noticed that sometimes it would take a long time for FCP to see the recorder and sometimes it didnt see it at all. I discovered that when I had another FW device hooked up it would cause the issues. So I now either turn it off or disconect it and It sees it pretty quick. According to Apple Pro Apps support this is normal with the built in FW.

I haven’t used the XL1 in so long I forgot what the button was called so I did a little research and found this from the DVInfo site.
    https://www.dvinfo.net/canon/tips.php

    The Watchdog notes:

If you’re recording time code during your shoot, you’ll always see the time code numbers running in the viewfinder, they can’t be switched off. However, you may not want the number display to go out over your cables (to a remote recording deck during a multiple-camera shoot, for instance), which they will unless you’ve remembered to bring along your XL1’s wireless remote control. Aim it at the back of the camera and press the “on screen” button. This will toggle off (or on) the display information going through the video outputs.

    Thanks Todd,
I have never used the remote for this so I had to find it first. But it worked like a charm.
    Have A blessed day.

    Thanks,
