[Peter Corbett] “Thanks Richard. Did you find the workflow fluid and effective in long-form editing with FCP? Although I’m very happy with Premiere Pro’s plugin structure and integration with other Adobe apps, the ease of use (ala edit) is lacking.”

It would depend upon the specific project. If you were doing a long form with just some color correction and maybe a few lower third supers then FCP is at least as good (in my experience/opinion) as Avid and, in some ways even better than Smoke and Editbox because both of those systems (at least the versions I use) need to render before it can be played back.

If you have a lot of film dirt and tape dropout to paint out then you might find yourself wishing for an Editbox but otherwise I am pretty impressed with FCP.

As for integration with After Effects, I would suggest purchasing Automatic Duck’s pro import. The integration is seemless and well worth the money.

[Peter Corbett] “But I’m hesitant to spend big bucks again. I just paid off my discreet system from ’97. I’m not sure if the 2.0 would have enough grunt for the new RT Extreme syuff, but I’ll continue snooping around. “

I went from a Discreet Smoke and a Quantel Editbox to FCP 4.5 production suite and Adobe After Effects. I can tell you, from my experience, the FCP/AE combo is far more powerful (and faster) than the expensive Quantel and Discreet machines that I used and were only a small fraction of the price! I had the same concerns as you but those misgivings were unfounded.
