John, I have been editing SX10 video with Sony Vegas 7e. Just drop it on the timeline with no problem. Have also tested some SX1 files. No problem.
The SX1 and SX10 video files are h.264 files in an MOV conatiner. That is different than their previous AVI files which were MJPEG.

Windows XP includes the Convert.exe utility for converting a FAT partition to an NTFS partition. Here is the article How to Use Convert.exe to Convert a Partition to the NTFS File System from Microsoft: https://support.microsoft.com/kb/314097/EN-US/
I know several people who have done the conversion with no problems.
