I would use Avid. After Effects is designed for motion graphics and compositing. It’s not a real time application, plus, the only way to get your sequence into After Effects would be to automatic duck it. Since After Effects works in layers, versus tracks, you could easily get a 100+ layer sequence which can be fairly daunting to work on. Media Composer has good color correction options, and Symphony will give you more options.

If you have After Effects, you can use Time Remapping combined with Pixel Motion to get a good timelapse effect.

If you converted to AIF at 32-bit float, they will still need to be rendered. Like Michael said, make sure they are 16 bit or 24 bit. Also, under your render selection settings, is the audio “needs render” checked before you hit cmd-R? Those settings seem to confuse people a bit, you check on the color of clip you’d like rendered. When you do, it will have a check mark on it. Then when you hit cmd-r, it will render any type of render color that is checked.

You will also need to transcode to DNxHD if you plan to send out the the audio in an AAF for mixing.

General Error 34 is a disk full error. A 1 TB drive with only 17 gigs free is dangerously full. You should always leave a bare minimum of 10% of your drive empty (some argue 20%). Try rendering out to a different drive, and even better, buy a new drive and offload some of that footage.

What version of Media Composer are you using? I have used MC5 to import MTS files (Panasonic AVCHD). I couldn’t use AMA to access the files, I had to use the import feature and it did take a long while.
The issue with using Vegas to print to DV tape, and then import into Avid is that your timecode won’t match if you want to conform the footage to HD later. Are your MTS files HD?
What version of Media Composer are you using? What camera recorded the MTS files? Knowing those will help.
