No worries man, we all gotta get started somewhere.
If it’s a musical production with tracks specific to the piece, I would keep that on an external drive. Consider that media for that specific project, just as the unique footage shot for that project. The stuff you’d probably want on a local hard drive would be stock music libraries, or if you use a program like smart sound to create music cues, and likewise your collection of sound effects.
A quad core i7 is going to be a rocking’ system. You’re probably working with HD and not anything crazy like 2k and 4k, and that will work like a champ for that.
The ram will be useful as MC6 is now 64-bit and will be able to harness that RAM. Of course this is the first version in 64-bit and I’m sure it will get better in time, but RAM is a good investment in my mind.

I always go with the combo upgrades, in fact when 10.7.3 came out, there was a problem with the patch update and the combo was the only way to go. Personally, I would remove Magic Bullet, if there’s a serial tied to an online activation I would deactivate that. Install Media Composer and re-enter the serial. Again, not everybody does this and I’ve heard of it working out, but I tend to be a little crazy about that stuff.
I’m using 10.7.3 and nothing notably different from 10.7.2 but it works fine.

Good rule of thumb, get the largest hard drives you can afford, get the fastest processor you can afford and accept the fact that your system will be almost completely obsolete in 2 years (No way around that one).
As far as internal hard drives, get one large enough to hold your sound effects and music libraries, stuff that will be constant from project to project, but if you’re working on a client basis I would look into external solutions. While it took them long enough, it looks like Thunderbolt solutions are finally coming down the pipe and those might be a good option. They’re still pricey, but will provide fantastic performance for editing.
As far as editing goes, I wouldn’t bother with time capsule or Apple TV. I would consider a break out box of some sort. Blackmagic has a thunderbolt break out box, but so does AJA and I’ve always been a bigger fan of them. It’s called the io XT, and will allow you to connect your Avid MC6 or Final Cut system to a broadcast monitor.

That’s how I do it, and it’s worked out alright for me. If you have Boris Continuum Complete, I also deactivate and reinstall that though they say you don’t have to. I’m probably just a little OCD about that stuff!

As long as you copy your media properly, make sure your media databases are rebuilt every time, sharing off location on Avid is a dream. I prefer it over Final Cut and Premiere, because those systems are dependent on keeping the exact same file structure, even down to the hard drive name. With the Avid, as long as you copy the media to your Avid Media File>MXF>1 folder on both drives, they’ll come up online and you’re good to go. You can even use “Media Copy” from Automatic Duck which is now offered for free to make the process easier.

Oh gotcha. Then in that case, that is pretty strange. You might start with basic maintenance, trash your MC states and site settings.

Coming back from Pro Tools, if it was just an audio stem then it makes perfect sense that it had no handles. If it were an AAF kicked out of pro tools, it would be up to the mixer to include handles, but in truth, I don’t know much about Pro Tools abilities in exporting AAFs, as I’ve always gotten stems in AIF format, which by nature, don’t include stems. I would assume you could kick out an AAF from pro tools, especially given Avid’s big push on better interoperability, but I’m not positive on that one.

The Pro Tools operator also has the option to bring in, or not bring in audio renders. Did you check to make sure this isn’t the case? I once had this wreak havoc on a sequence that was mixing frame rates.

Yes. Don’t do it. Linking via AMA locally can be shaky enough, but over the network, Unity or ISIS alike, tends to cause various issues with clips randomly going offline. With tapeless material, I link via AMA locally and then transcode to network drives.
If your footage was recorded as DNxHD, why not fast import? It’ll come in very quickly and it will come in as native Avid media which will play much nicer.
