    I tried again and it seems I was able to create a .iso file that passes muster with Amazon. I used Disk Utility to convert a disk image (.img) file that I had created in 2005 into a .cdr file and then used a terminal command “mv [FILENAME].cdr [FILENAME].iso” to convert it to a .iso file.

    I have no idea what this did differently from the previous conversion using hdiutil.

    For what it’s worth, I am pretty sure I created the .iso file by opening the disk image in Disk Utility, saving it as a .cdr file and converting it to a .iso file with a command line in terminal:

    hdutil makehybrid -iso -joliet -o [filename].iso [filename].cdr
