Is that all a matter of signing/acting according to the contract and trust?

    For the most part, yes.

The after effects render order is the following:

    SOURCE
    MASK
    EFFECTS
    TRANSFORMATIONS

    (smet)

Imagine the problems if masks were not on the source. Yikes! Or effects ignored masks!!

  • Cinema 4D is the “normal” application to do that, using mograph > mo text, which is not part of Cinema 4D Lite.

Yes equipment, but also insurance, shipping. When you mentioned art installation, I was unsure exactly what you’re sending, for example.

Do you have an hard costs to cover?

  • Wiggle expression can be applied to the opacity Transform so you can make things do that blink. There are thousands of expression tutorials to google search.

For the words, I would use the Animate > Character Offset (and then inside that you can find a bunch of settings to manipulate and key frame)

Finally, I would use a Camera Layer to zoom in and out quickly, and align that with the keyframes so the camera “gets to the place” just before the letter pops on (via the Character Offset).

First I guess just mess around with the Animate > Character Offset.

When you feel comfortable with that, make the text layer 3D. Then add a camera. And a null layer. make the null layer 3D. reveal the position of the null layer. Reveal the point of interest for the camera and also reveal the position of the camera.

Option-click the stop watch (keyframe icon) for the camera point of interest and drag the expression pickwhip (the spiral) to the null layer’s Position.

Then option-click the stopwatch (keyframe icon) for the camera position and pickwhip it also to the null layer’s Position.

At this point, you will lose your picture because you have moved your camera to where the null layer is, so twirl down its Position and drag the Z-axis to (-1200) or so — whatever looks right to you. From here on out, you will use the Null Layer to move the camera, so I usually rename the null layer to Camera Truck. You can keyframe the Camera Truck position to make it move where you want it to.

Back to basics: in film, shutter speed is calculated as follows:

Frame Rate * Shutter Angle = Shutter Speed

    For example:

    1/24 * 180-degrees/360-degrees = 1/48 shutter speed.

What makes the smeariness effect? The shutter angle, and here is where your experimental film is an actual experiment:

Choose any frame rate you want, but be sure to use an obtuse shutter angle (>180/360) such as 270/360. That shutter speed calculates to 1/24 * 3/4 = 1/32 (using a consistent f/stop throughout, light to that shutter speed) — note how that is SLOWER than the 1/48. Is it slow enough for the smear you’re after? I don’t know. That’s why we experiment. ☺

    1/8 * 3/4 = 3/32 = 1/10-ish (using the same f/stop above, light to that shutter speed) — is that slow enough? I don’t know.

Your last experiment then will be: do not use the pressure plate — that’s the doo-dad that keeps the film firm in the frame, so without that doo-dad in place (or loose — more experiments), then the film will wobble all over the place. Light to the shutter speed that the camera is set too.

We are trying to keep the light on the film as long as possible.

    Good luck!

(NOTE: I recall that the bolex’s reflex prism ate-up 1/3 stop of light, so more experiments.: 100 feet is about 10 minutes at 24fps and a lot less at 8fps, so its wise to have your subject cued and rehearsed. )

Sorry I missed this before. I used to do a lot of this stuff for bars and venues. Shooting the footage was almost ridiculous because the aspect ratios are incompatible. So it was a lot of cropping in After Effects and other motion graphics — all of it relatively simple. I did not “film” in that aspect I framed the image accordingly (cropping out the rest) in the AE comp.
