  • Stills get it too.
So do musicians, songwriters, illustrators, graphic designers

  • Has anyone actually seen the documentary yet?

I would find out exactly why the charity needs the footage. Is it to put it on their Web site for the purpose of helping the needy? If so, you give them some footage, let their web department do what they want.

Is it to resell to another filmmaker so that person can make a competing documentary? If so, don’t give them any footage.

Is it to make an ad to screen on tv? Then give them the footage but make sure you get a big public thank you during the spot.

Oh yeah…many actors also need a reel cut, which you could do.

You should take an acting class, so you can understand dramatic beats. It doesn’t need to be a semester long thing. A class at the local theatre is a great place to learn by doing. Also it’s a great place to meet actors.

    — “walk and talk” in such a way that you can use turning corners as cuts, and a way to plan for new setups. It also will hide the changing daylight a bit. In this example, the actors will create the rhythm and pacing of the scene.

    — pick a cool location and angle, then use a white bed sheet (because its cheap) to soften the direct sun. This will be more traditional coverage: Master, 2-shot, OTS, Singles. In this example, the editor will create the rhythm and pacing of the scene.

Return on Capital Employed (ROCE) is a great way to account for your investment. A CPA can offer a way better calculation than I can.

Regardless, P2 ain’t dead. I imagined P2 would be faster than tape, and it is. But there is still a significant Log and Transfer process. Keeping track of files has been rather tedious.

You aren’t without relevant tape options: HDCAM for example. But wow, that would take longer to recoup the ROCE. But it might open up new markets, like rentals.

the contracts are extensive, worth reading, but mostly pie in the sky. Regardless, you’ll get the gist of what legal issues need managing.

    Apple IIe.
    I loved that machine

  • The rate he is being paid matters too. There’s two kinds of freelancing.

One type is I do work on my machine. I charge a lot more.

The other type is I do work on your machine. I charge less (and don’t have to deal with client egos).

If he is the first type, then he is responsible for his software and plugins.

If he is the second type, then you are responsible for the software and plugins.

  • Thanks for such great contributions!

My last name really is HERD!
